Jamaica Trying to Combat Late Baby Naming

Jamaica will be giving free birth certificates to all new parents who name their babies before leaving the hospital starting this New Year’s Day.

Why? Because over 32,000 of the 45,000 babies born in Jamaican hospitals every year go home nameless.

I wonder if there’s a cultural reason why most Jamaicans don’t pick out baby names beforehand. I also wonder how many US and Canadian babies go home without a name. (Anyone ever seen any stats on this?)
