Pet insurance provider Direct Line recently published lists of the top dog and cat names* in the UK:
|
Dogs 1. Molly 2. Max 3. Charlie 4. Holly 5. Poppy 6. Ben 7. Alfie 8. Jack 9. Sam 10. Barney |
Cats 1. Molly 2. Charlie 3. Tigger 4. Poppy 5. Oscar 6. Smudge 7. Millie 8. Daisy 9. Max 10. Jasper |
It seems human names are popular choices for UK pets (even more so than for NYC pets). In fact, most of the above were among the 100 most popular baby names in the UK in 2006:
- Girls – Millie (#20), Molly (#24), Daisy (#25), Holly (#26), Poppy (#30)
- Boys – Jack (#1), Charlie (#10), Alfie (#16), Max (#29), Ben (#38), Oscar (#47), Sam (#72)
Only Barney, Jasper, Smudge and Tigger didn’t rank. (Not too surprising, really, in the cases of Smudge and Tigger…)
*I don’t know how representative these lists are of the general pet population. I’m sure only pets insured by Direct Line were included in the research.

Do you think Maysi Dixie or Maysi Grace sounds better for a black pug puppy?
