Mohammed Less Popular after 9/11?

Did you know that Mohammed — when all its spelling variations are accounted for — is the second most popular name for baby boys in the UK? (You probably did, if you caught the news last week.)

In response to that information, Foreign Policy blogger Preeti Aroon wondered if Muslims in the U.S. had been “hesitant to name their sons Mohammed after the 9/11 terrorist attacks.” She looked at data for 4 variant spellings (Mohamed, Mohammad, Mohammed, and Muhammad) and decided that this “might have been the case, at least for a while.”
