Names from Children’s Literature – Jonas

In Lois Lowry’s The Giver (1993), the future society Jonas lives in has eliminated things like poverty, violence and sadness, but it has also done away with love, beauty and joy.

Jonas comes to understand what an immense loss this is, and he creates a plan to change his community back to the way it once was.

The name Jonas is a variant of Jonah, which comes from the Hebrew name Yonah (meaning “dove”). Jonas has been used regularly for decades, but has never been extremely popular.

My wife and I absolutely love this story. It’s touching and very well written.

The name Jonas, however, was never in my list of choices ;)
