I’ve been keeping my eye on Asher lately. I think there’s a good chance this name will crack the U.S. top 100 soon — possibly even on the upcoming 2007 list. Why do I think this? There are a few reasons…
- It’s got a promising trajectory:
2006
2005
2004
2003
2002
2001
2000
1999

529th
579th
601st
686th
731st - It’s got a great definition. (It was derived from a Hebrew word meaning “happy” or “blessing.”)
- Other “Ash-” names (e.g. Ashley, Ashton, Ashlyn) are currently popular.
- It’s biblical, which is a big plus for many people.
- It seems to be everywhere lately — at least to me. I know several babies with the name, and I’ve heard about many more (via parents who write to me).
What do you think — is Asher up-and-coming? Do you think it’s a good name?

My name is Asher Lev. Great book.
I’m currently babysitting a little girl named Ashling. And there’s an Aislyn (“Ash-lynn”) at church the same age. I had a kid in my first grade class named Acheron (Ash-er-in). Asher could happen.
I’ve liked the name Asher ever since I read the book “The Giver” by Lois Lowry in junior high. It’s the name of one of the main characters, along with Jonas (which I also LOVE and am very sad is becoming more popular as well!)
Although, I vaguely remember telling my mother I liked the name, and she said, “Yuck. Sounds like ashtray.”
We named out little guy Asher in May 07, we knew an Asher my hubby used to work with him and after discovring its out of the old testament in the bible(one of the 7 tribes of isreal)…..we used it……now its really gained in popularity, which stinks cuz i like to have as unique of name as possible.
All you have to do is google a name or type it in on facebook and you’ll see the most uncommon names really aren’t so uncommon.
Hasn’t cracked the top 100 yet, but it’s getting close:
2009 – 165th
2008 – 206th
2007 – 233rd
