More Never-Ranked Plants Names – Disa, Linnaea, Nigella, Vanda

Here are a few botanical genus names that might make nice baby girl names:

  • Calluna (its sole species is the national flower of Norway)
  • Celosia (cockscombs)
  • Disa (orchids named for Disa, heroine of a Swedish legend)
  • Kalmia
  • Karina (gentians)
  • Kerria
  • Laelia (orchids)
  • Linnaea (its single species is the twinflower)
  • Lunaria (includes the Money Plant)
  • Nandina
  • Neea
  • Nigella
  • Nyssa (tupelo trees)
  • Primula (includes the primroses)
  • Serissa (its single species is a common bonsai)
  • Vanda (orchids)

My last plant-themed list included the genus (and common) names Acacia, Camellia and Zinnia.

    We named our daughter Kalmia and we always get such positive reactions to it. It’s an almost unheard-of name yet sounds so natural. Not to mention, it’s a beautiful flowering bush!
