Oral Contraceptives with Female Names – Camila, Portia, Yasmin

It may seem strange that I’m mentioning contraceptives on a baby-related blog, but…

Have you ever noticed that the names of many oral contraceptives sound a lot like (or really are) female names?

For example, there’s Camila and Portia, both made by Barr Pharmaceuticals, and Yasmin, made by Bayer.

Other birth control pill names that seem to have been inspired by human names include:

  • Alesse (made by Wyeth)
  • Apri, Aviane, Errin, Jolessa, Kariva and Lessina (made by Barr)
  • Cesia and Solia (made by Prasco)
  • Leena, Levora, Lutera, Trivora and Zovia (made by Watson)
  • Yasminelle and Yaz (made by Bayer)

A few non-oral contraceptives (e.g. Jadelle, Lea’s Shield, Lunelle, Mirena) follow the pattern as well.
