Baby Name Needed – Name for Baby Girl #2

A reader named Alex is looking for a name for her second daughter, due this September:

My first born is named Rowan Isobel and we’re looking for a name that will complement her name. We generally like Welsh/Celtic names (my husband’s name is O’Donnell) but also like unusual names. Rowan was ‘almost’ Arwen or Bronwyn, but – though we like those names, we think they are too close to Rowan. The biggest problem is that we think Rowan is SUCH a perfect name – we may have set the bar too high! Any suggestion would be appreciated!

I brainstormed for Celtic names that seemed to fit with the “style” of Rowan, and here’s what I came up with:

Afanen
Afton
Ainsley
Aisling
Carys
Delyth
Devin
Dylan
Epona
Finley
Finola
Greer
Keelan
Kendall
Kennedy
Meredith
Moira
Morgan
Niamh
Quinn
Riley
Rory
Shea
Teagan

What other names might sound good with Rowan? (I think non-Celtic suggestions are welcome as well.)

  1. Rhys? One of the Mac names, like Mackenzie? Nerys?

Maybe another direction to go would be to look for another tree or shrub name. Willow evokes for me the same gracefulness that Rowan does.

Acacia, Hazel, Holly, Laurel, Linden, Magnolia, Myrtle, Olive, Quince, Sequoia, Yarrow

  2. Aine (pronounced Anya). Maybe too hard. Same with Aoife (Eefah). But I have two that I think are definitely worth a look–my second daughter’s name is Maeve–usually (80% of the time) pronounced correctly, very Irish, very pretty. And the other I like is, of course, my sister’s name. Bevin. In her 26 years we have met only 2 other Bevins here in the states, but it doesn’t sound too overly exotic. Now, both of these are Irish, not Welsh, but O’Donnell strikes me as rather Irish as well. Other thoughts: Isolde, Gwen, Morwen, Rhiannon, Fiona.

  3. Personaly I love the name Carys. Rowen and Carys. Nice.

2 other names I really like and think would complement Rowen are Greer and Rory.

But then I really like c in dc’s idea of using another tree name too, especially Willow. I’ve always loved that name. Rowen and Willow O’Donnell. How perfect does that sound? Absolutely, that’s how perfect :)

  4. Alex just e-mailed. She thanks everyone for the suggestions, and will let us know the name she and her husband choose once the baby is born (a couple of months from now).

  5. I really love the name Eisley, for a boy or a girl. I agree with Rory, too, though.
Maybe Regan? Rowan and Regan sounds cute.
I also think Reily or Riley are cute names for a girl, and there is just something about alliterated names!
    Good luck :D
