Celebrity Baby Name – Archie

Comedians Amy Poehler and Will Arnett welcomed their first child, a baby boy, yesterday in New York City.

They named their son Archie.

Archie was the 35th most popular boy name in England and Wales last year, but it hasn’t cracked the U.S. top 1,000 in two decades. Do you think its use as a celebrity baby name will give it a boost (à la Maddox)?

  1. According to Huffington Post, the baby’s full name is Archibald William Emerson Arnett — after his dad, whose full name is William Emerson Arnett. While Archie (and other nicknames) can be found among the most popular boys names in England and Wales in 2007, Archibald is not included in the top 300. I doubt that either Archie or Archibald will catch on in the U.S. (For one thing, there’s the Archie Bunker image in the U.S. to contend with.)

I looked up the name and learned that Archibald is of Norman French origin and has long been associated with Scotland.

  2. Thanks, Patricia!

Earlier today I tried checking a few other sources to see if the full name really was just “Archie Arnett.” None of the places I checked said anything different, so I figured that was the full name. Guess not. :)

I could see Archie maybe catching on here. Not Archibald, though — both because of the Bunker thing and because of the word “bald.” (Too much teasing potential.)
