A reader named Char recently asked me about the name Rose:
Rose is a family name that we hoped to use as a first name. Since it is usually a middle name…what do you suggest for a middle name?
Interesting question! Well, to start off, I would avoid names that:
- Start with a Z, S, soft C, or Zh-sound (e.g. Jeanne),
- Could turn the combination into a pun (e.g. Rose Fleur), and
- Could make the combination sound like a compound name (e.g. Rose Mary).
I think those are pretty good general guidelines. As a matter of personal taste, I’d also stay away from names that:
- Start with an R, and
- Have just one syllable.
(Some might really like pairings such as “Rose Rachel” or “Rose Grace,” though, so these last two guidelines aren’t necessarily universal.)
Now, on to the names that I would actually seek out. I like it when short forenames are followed by middles that start with an unstressed syllable, so I’d focus on names such as:
Of the above, I’d probably shortlist…let’s see….Marissa, Naomi, Nicole, Olivia, and Theresa.
What types of middle names do you think would work with Rose? Any specific suggestions for Char?
