Baby Name Needed – Middle Name for Alice

A reader named Amy needs a bit of assistance:

Our third child, a baby girl, is due in two weeks and we are having trouble finalizing her name. The first name will be Alice. Would you please suggest unpopular yet interesting middles names that would compliment a French surname?

(The surname has two syllables–stress on the second syllable–and starts with the letter L.)

The baby is due in a matter of days…but I’m swamped with work and don’t have time to really mull over name suggestions like I normally do. So the list below is the product of a quick brainstorm…

Benjamine
Bryony
Callista
Cordelia
Dominica
Faustine
Helene
Iphigenia
Melisande
Pandora
Tallulah
Tatiana
Ursula
Wilhelmina
Yolanda

I’ll do my best to come up with other (better?) suggestions over the next few days and post them in the comments.

In the meanwhile, what other unpopular-yet-interesting names do you think could work with Alice?

Update, 6/03 – Alice is here! Scroll down to the final comment to find out what her middle name is…

  1. Alice has been a very popular name in the birth announcements of one London newspaper, so I looked on their website to see what middle names have been paired with Alice. Most frequent was Alice Elizabeth. Here are other middle names that were paired with Alice:
    Louisa
    Annabel
    Katherine, Katharine, Catherine
    Claire
    Georgina
    Olivia
    Cecily
    Violet
    Matilda
    Isabella, Isabel
    Charlotte
    Julia
    Frances
    Kate, Rose, Anne, Emma, Maruy

Suggestions from a list of top 100 girls’ names in France:

Charlotte (Alice Charlotte appeared several times in the London newspaper birth announcements mentioned above)

    Emilie, Emeline
    Victoria
    Mathilde
    Lucie
    Juliette
    Chloe
    Elise

BTW, Alice also appears in the French top 100.

I also like the French sound of Alice Catherine and Alice Nathalie.

  3. oops! The last name in my first response is Mary.

  4. Another correction, scratch Elise: it sounds too much like Alice. But i think Alice Elisabeth (French spelling of the latter) would be very pretty.

  5. Sandrine or Sondrine

  6. Alice Kerena
    Alice Maude
    Alice Meave
    Alice Louisa
    Alice Charlotte
    Alice Elinor
    Alice Josephine
    Alice Leonora
    Alice Regina
    Alice Geneva
    Alice Irina
    Alice Adair

  7. Thanks so much for the suggestions, everyone — they’re great!

  8. Bouncing off Yolanda, I think Yolaine is pretty, and sounds really French. ;)

  9. Work is still in the way, so I won’t get a chance to come back to Amy’s question before the baby arrives, unfortunately. But if you guys come up with any other suggestions over the next few days, please throw ‘em out there! I’m sure Amy will appreciate it. :)

  10. Alice Josette.
    Alice Leigh
    Alice Elaine
    Alice Violet

That’s all I got…well, except I should throw in there “Alice Ruth” because it’s my grandma’s name, though she dislikes the Ruth terribly, so I guess I wouldn’t actually recommend it. And to be honest, “Leigh” was her fave name for a girl, and I really do think Alice Leigh (above) sounds great…Alice Leigh L_____. Pretty.

  11. I like & second the previous suggestions of:

    Alice Elisabeth
    Alice Josephine
    Alice Olivia
    Alice Ursula

My suggestion is: Alice Lucilla L__________

Lucilla is Latin and means “Light” – and I think a name like Alice benefits from a name that flows easily

  12. Here are some good suggestions:

    Ramona
    Juliet
    Naomi
    Noelle
    Evangeline

  13. What about Veronica or Veronique?????

  14. I just heard from Amy — she and her husband ended up choosing Elisabeth as Alice’s middle name.

    Congratulations, Amy!

  15. Great choice amy!
I am called Alice Elizabeth as well and even if i do say so myself i think it flows nicely. Congrats!

  16. Rose!
Im called alice and I think that middle name goes realy well

  17. Alice Jeanette
    Alice rena
    Alice Larena
    Alice darlynn
