Name in the News – Lluís

Lluís Colet, a 62-year-old Frenchman, has just broken the world record for longest speech by talking nonstop for 124 hours. (The previous record was 120 hours.)

One of the main topics of his speech was Catalan culture…which makes it easy for me now to segue to his name, the Catalan version of Louis.

Louis can be traced back to Ludwig, a Germanic name comprised of elements meaning “fame” and “war.”

That double-L at the start of Lluís can also be seen in the Catalan names Llorenç (Laurence) and Lluc (Luke). It should sound like the “lli” in the word million, according to Wikitravel.
