Baby Name Needed – Middle Name for Andrew

A reader named Jaime is expecting a baby boy this May:

We’re a Hispanic family that like a strong name like Andrew […] but we’re having trouble with a middle name. Andrew is long already so we want something short for a middle name.

The baby’s last name will be Cruz.

I’m not sure what style of name Jaime is looking for, but here are some short names (of various styles) that I think sound good between Andrew and Cruz:

Eli
Ezra
Ian
Jay
Joe
John/Juan
Jude
Kai
Kane
Kyle
Leo
Lou
Louis/Luis
Lucas
Lyle
Mel
Noah/Noé
Owen
Paul
Saul
Scott
Seth
Shane
Tate
Theo
Toby
Todd
Ty
Vito
Zeno

Do you have any other middle name suggestions for Jaime?

  1. One of my grandsons (age 5) is named Andrew Leon. Like your family, Andrew’s dad is Hispanic, with the full given name of Leonardo and nickname of Leo or Leon. Andrew’s mom (our daughter) prefers to call her husband Leon and that’s the form of the name she decided to give their son as his middle name.

BTW, I don’t really think of Andrew as a long name. We have grandsons — brothers (and also half Hispanic) — called Christopher, Alexander and Nicholas. Those are what I think of as “long names”.

  2. Andrew is a family name for me, so I’ll include some middle names form family members.

    Andrew William
    Andrew Hayden
    Andrew Elias
    Andrew Eric
    Andrew Johan

Additionally here are some other ideas:
    Andrew Dale
    Andrew Ephraim
    Andrew Evan
    Andrew George/Jorge
    Andrew Oscar
    Andrew Pascal
    Andrew Teo

  3. I like Jude, Seth, Ian, Luis and Leo (we just named our newborn Edward Leo Cassidy Wissinger, FYI, to go by Leo).

Does the family want a Spanish origin name? Luis would be nice. It’s hard to think of short names, though, off the top of my head.

  4. Thanks for the suggestions, everyone!

Bridgett, that was a question I had as well–I’m not sure if they’re looking for a Spanish middle specifically. I will let you know if I find out more.

  5. Just heard from Jaime! Here’s what he says:

My wife and I went with what we think is an uncommon name that she and I liked. Our little boys name is Carlo Andrew Cruz. In Spanish…Carlo Andres Cruz.

    Congrats to you both!
