Poll Results – You’d Choose Name X over Name Y

The Name X vs. Name Y poll didn’t get as many responses as my polls tend to get — probably because the wording was a bit abstract. (Sorry about that!) Of the 136 votes cast…

  • 83 (or 61%) were for Name X (the name that is “very significant to you, but could be a burden to your child”)
  • 53 (or 39%) were for Name Y (the name that is “totally unremarkable to you, but won’t be a burden to your child”)

So…more people would pick the significant-but-unusual name instead of the ordinary-but-acceptable name. Not too surprising, methinks.

The next (& much simpler!) poll is already up…

  1. I was surprised by the results. I too would prefer a very significant name but not if it could be a burden to my child. I really don’t think it’s fair of parents to pick a name that they think could trouble their child. The parents may find the name very significant and feel pleased to have conferred it on their child, but the CHILD/ADULT who bears the possibly burdensome name has to live with it all his/her life. I would think in most cases a compromise could be reached — like giving a name similar to the possibly burdensome name or using it as the middle name.

    I agree–I certainly hope that’s what happens. :)

But given the two choices, and no in-between option, I wasn’t too surprised to see this result. Many modern parents really seem to value significance/originality when it comes to names.
