A reader named Lauren is due in about a week, but she and her husband have not yet been able to agree on a name for their second daughter:
My first daughter’s name is Elizabeth Rose. For our second I love Sara but my husband doesn’t, he likes Catherine. We haven’t even thought of a middle name yet. I like classic spellings and nothing that sounds too boyish as a nickname because of the last name Floyd.* Last night we thought of Madeline with nickname Maddy…but [we’re] not sure.
Personally, I think Catherine goes quite well with Elizabeth. Both are classic, formal-sounding names that can be shortened in a variety of ways for everyday use. But Sara and Madeline are great names as well, and a similar case could be made for either one. (Which of the three do you guys like best?)
Here are a few other names Lauren and her husband might also like:
Abigail Amelia Bianca Cassandra Caroline | Cecilia Charlotte Judith Julia Leah | Lillian Lydia Margaret Martina Mary | Melanie Miriam Penelope Rachel Rebecca | Sophia Sylvia Tabitha Victoria Vivian |
Simple, short middles on par with Rose include Claire, Grace, Joy, Lynn, Marie, and Nicole.
What other names would you guys suggest? (How about combinations of firsts & middles?)
*The actual surname is not Floyd, but it is (similarly) a short F-name that is used as a masculine first name.
Update, 6/10: The baby has arrived! Scroll down to the 4th comment to find out what her name is…
how about:
Audrey
Camille
Clara
Allison
Gretchen
Irene
Alice
Kathleen
I’m thinking also
Anne
Violette
Alice
Sarah
Beatrix
Ottolie
Emily
Great choices though and good luck for choosing Elizabeths sisters name! :D
Still haven’t delivered yet, but thanks for the responses. I wasn’t exactly clear, but I don’t know if it is a girl or a boy. But since we decided if it was a boy it would be named after his dad, Jeremy Lee. However, this still left us at odds with the girl name. We still haven’t completely decided, but still a little nervous as the due date is in 2 days. I really liked the idea of Leah in Nancy’s response, but thinking of the Italian spelling “Lia” I will keep you posted. Thanks again for the responses….
It’s A GIRL. June 5th! at 3:40am. Of course we went to the last day in the hospital deciding on the name. It came down to Sara, Catherine, and we added Lori. We compromised and named her Lori Catherine. Thanks again for your help and responses. Lauren
Congratulations! :)
Congratulations!!! Our first daughters both have the same name! Elizabeth Rose is a classic beautiful name!!!
