Baby Name Needed – Boy Name that Starts with R

A reader named Anna is expecting a baby boy. His middle name will be Anderson. She’d like his first name to begin with the letter R.

The baby’s father’s name is Rei, so I’m not sure if he and Anna are looking for another short R-name, but I threw a few in just in case:

Radley
Rafferty
Ramsey
Raphael
Reece
Reeve
Reid
Reginald
Regis
Rex
Richard
Ridley
Ritter
Robert
Roderick
Rodney
Roger
Ronald
Roscoe
Royce
Rudy
Rupert
Russell
Ryder

I also added a handful of surnames, and avoided traditional forenames that end with -n and -nd (because they would run up against the An-/And- of Anderson.)

Do you like any of the above R-names with Anderson? What others would you suggest?

I love Rafferty and Raphael, but Rafferty Anderson is a mouthful! Raphael Anderson is a smidge better.

From the shorter names on the list, I rather like Reece – though the Welsh spelling, Rhys, might be the better choice. (Then again, I just spoke with a female, 30-something Reece – perhaps that is coloring my perception of the name.)

But I wonder if Rei and Rhys/Reece are too close? (I assume Rei rhymes with Ray.) A “ro” name might be more distinctive. Ronan, Rohin, Rohan, Rowen, Rohn … Rohn Anderson sounds strong; Rohan/Rowen Anderson would be my second thought.

Reece Anderson would be my favorite, with Royce coming in second, but I also like Abby’s suggestion of Rohan/Rowen. The only issue might be with the slight rhyming tendency with Rowen and Anderson, but I don’t feel it’s strong enough to matter.

Considering he’ll have a surname middle name, I’d lean towards a more traditional first name, so he doesn’t sound like a law firm. If his first name is a surname-style and his middle name is a surname-style and then you use his actual surname, Ramsey Anderson Smith, for example – it really could be a bit much. That’s no cut on Anderson either – I love the name – it’s a family name for us, and we considered it for a first name, but then thought everyone would think we were going for the whole Anderson Cooper thing (nope), so then we started experimenting with it for a middle name, and I ran into that law firm sound, lol. Again, I’m weird – just a thought.

Having said all of that, a few surname sort of first names that aren’t on your list: Reilly & Ross. River? Rocco? Not sure about those. Reuben Anderson sounds okay. Then there’s Rory – I think that would be great – Rory Anderson sounds fantastic! From your list, I think I like Rex the best.

I agree on the authentic Rhys spelling if that name is chosen.

I love Rhys, Reid, Ronan, Rowen, Reilly, Rocco, and Rory. If I had to narrow it down,I think Rhys Anderson, Reid Anderson, Reilly Anderson, and Rory Anderson sound wonderful.
