While looking for male and female saint names that would appeal to parents, I discovered many names that belong at the other end of the spectrum.
But a post full of hundreds of horrible-yet-holy names? That would’ve taken up quite a bit of space. So I whittled it down to a few dozen:
| Female | Male | |
|---|---|---|
|
St. Austreberta St. Begga St. Burgundofara St. Emerentiana St. Eustochium St. Exuperantia St. Frideswide St. Milburga St. Monegundis St. Perseveranda St. Pharaildis St. Praepedigna St. Radegundis St. Walburgis St. Waltrude |
St. Agathopodus St. Ansgar St. Aphthonius St. Asclepiodotus St. Barsanuphius St. Chrodogangus St. Clodulphus St. Ctesiphon St. Droctoveus St. Ebrulfus St. Erkembode St. Ethbinus St. Ethelwoldus St. Flosculus St. Fronto |
St. Grimoaldus St. Homobonus Pope St. Hormisdas St. Lupus St. Mappalicus St. Nonnosus St. Paphnutius St. Phlegon St. Polyaenus St. Quodvultdeus St. Scubiculus St. Smaragdus St. Torquatus St. Wallabonsus St. Wandregisilus |
Which would sound the most ridiculous on a modern American child, do you think?

Homobonus. Definitely….
Polyaenus would be an unfortunate name.
Aww, Frideswide has always been a GP of mine. I named by accordion that when I was young. I think Emerentiana would actually make a pretty alternative to Emma. But I do like the Italian version if Emerenziana far better.
Polyaenus is pretty horrendous though. Yeesh. Poor Polyaneus.
I know an Ansgar – I think it’s an awesome name!! Emerentiana isn’t bad, not really usable though.
Homobonus would be quite horrible. And Begga would surely start the teasing.
i think you should add st. jehosaphat its just funny if you think about it…
I think the name Burgundofara would be strange on a modern American. It reminds me of Burgundy, like the color, and probably could be used as a reason to tease… But it’s not that bad if you say it out loud a couple times in a row.
