I’ve added a Baby Name Prompts widget to the top of my right sidebar. (The widget was originally intended to display quotations, but I’ve repurposed it.) I’m hoping visitors will be able to use it as a handy brainstorming tool–once I’ve got enough questions in the database, anyway. So far, I’ve only got a handful. Some are family-related:
- What’s your father’s name?
- What’s your mother’s name?
- What’s your father’s middle name?
- What’s your mother’s middle name?
- What’s your favorite aunt’s name?
- What’s your favorite uncle’s name?
- What’s your maternal grandmother’s name?
- What’s your maternal grandfather’s name?
- What’s your paternal grandmother’s name?
- What’s your paternal grandfather’s name?
The rest are preference-related:
- What’s the name of your favorite grade school teacher?
- What’s the name of your favorite high school teacher?
- What’s the name of your favorite college professor?
- What’s the name of your favorite childhood neighbor?
- What’s the name of your favorite artist?
- What’s the name of your favorite musician?
- What’s the name of your favorite composer?
- Think of your five favorite songs. Do any of them include a name?
- What’s the name of your favorite novelist?
- What’s the name of your favorite poet?
- What’s the name of your favorite philosopher?
- What’s the name of your favorite journalist?
- What’s the name of your favorite world leader (current or historical)?
- What’s the name of your favorite comedian?
- What’s the name of your favorite actor?

(Of course, I’ll be thinking about it as well. I’m not trying to get you guys to do all the work for me. I just thought I’d throw it out there ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday. Who knows, this sort of thing might make for fun dinnertime conversation.)

I noticed the widget the other day – cool idea! You might also ask “Are there any family nicknames?” Scooter and Skip might not make the cut, but my sister’s nickname – Bird – inspired one of our daughter’s middle names – Wren.
The same goes for something like “Are there any family surnames you might pass on?” We knew we wanted our son’s middle name to come from my side of the family, but ended up with a compromise choice. And then, a few days after he was born, I realized we could’ve taken part of my mother’s maiden name – Matteo – and tucked it in the middle spot. A friend did something similar, and it works beautifully.
