Let’s Talk About Sex – Baby Names from Conception Stories

We know Ron Howard is an actor. We also know he’s a director. What else do we know about him? Thanks to the names of his children, we know where he and his wife have had sex.

His eldest, Bryce Dallas, was conceived in Dallas, Texas. His middle two, twins Jocelyn Carlyle and Paige Carlyle, were conceived at The Carlyle in New York City (“while we were doing a publicity tour”). And his youngest, Reed Cross, was conceived somewhere along Lower Cross Road in Connecticut.

Now, in general, I appreciate names that have stories behind them. But sex stories? I’m not sure I’d like having a name that reminded me of my parents having sex.

So what I’d like to know is: How do you feel about baby names that were inspired by conception stories? Do you like them, dislike them, like them only sometimes…?

  1. Just spotted a funny (and relevant) article by Jim Mullen. Here’s the first paragraph:

If you’re a school teacher or an employer, it will come as no surprise that many parents are naming their children after the place where their child was conceived. Paris Hilton being the prime example. There are some things I would rather not know. I don’t know if it started with Paris Hilton, but after being introduced to children named Catalina, Jamaica and Antigua, I know it didn’t stop with her. We should probably count our blessings that parents aren’t completely honest or we’d end up with classrooms full of children named Hot Tub, Princess Cruise, Port Authority and Buick LeSabre.

  2. A slight correction: Reed’s middle name is Cross because he was conceived in the family home on Lower Cross Rd. in Greenwich, CT.

  3. A conception name I just spotted:

Whitney and Joe Exum fell in love in Carmel on the California coast. They conceived their first child during a Christmas vacation in Bequia, a tiny island near St. Lucia in the Caribbean.

That’s why their daughter is named Carmel Bequia. She was born on Sept. 23 at Plantation General Hospital.

How will Carmel react when she learns about the story?

“She will think her name is special because she symbolizes our love for each other,” Whitney Exum says.

    Bequia is pronounced BECK-way.
