It is the baby’s father’s name and he hates the name but he’s a jr. or a III already.

It happens to be shared by the neighbor’s or grandmother’s dog (which would eliminate Stevie, Dara, Trudy, Stan, Lucy, Horace, Franny, and Bo in my life). Not that these are bad names per se, it’s just that for a long time (until the pet dies…) there will always be the question, “was she named for the dog?”

It rhymes with the older sibling’s name. Or comes close. Lydia and Olivia should not be sisters. Bevin and Kevin should not be girl-boy twins. And so forth. I would also caution that sometimes full names sound great together but nicknames are what children get called on a day to day basis.

…it was inspired by an automobile brand. “Porsha,” anyone? Or Mégane Renaud, named for the Renault Mégane: http://www.metropoleparis.com/1999/450/450bistr.html (final item one page 1). (Hat tip for the Mégane example to Chrys of http://eggcorns.lascribe.net.)

… It’s the name of a city best known for its crime statistics (Camden, Tucson, Flint).

… It’s the name of a place best known for being a battlefield in a bloody war (Dresden, Shiloh, Normandy.)

It was inspired by an animated character. (Or, we could just throw all TV & Movie related names under the bus.)

If the first and last names together create a sentence. (e.g., Ima Carr)

If it’s going to create more family tension than it’s worth.
