Baby name needed: Girl name like Tatum

A reader named Kate writes:

I am currently pregnant with my first baby. We do not know whether a boy or girl yet, but we are brainstorming names. I love the girl’s name Tatum, but my best friend’s daughter has that name. Can you think of any similar girl’s names I might like?

I get this question every once in a while — probably because Tatum is such an idiosyncratic name.

Sloane has always been my default answer. But it only works for non-UK babies, thanks to the Sloane Rangers.

Other names that come to mind are:

Ainsley
Astrid
Beatrix
Blair
Blythe
Bryony
Cleo
Darcy
Deirdre
Hazel
Imogen
Kendall
Maeve
Meredith
Miriam
Morgan
Piper
Quinn
Reese
Rory
Rowena
Sybil
Tamar
Tanith

What other Tatum-like names can you come up with for Kate?

  1. Hmm. From your (Nancy’s) list, I think Blair, Blythe, Kendall, Piper, Quinn, Reese and Rory “match” my impression of Tatum the best. I’d add:
    Reagan
    Harper
    Scout
    Mallory
    Aubrey
    Shelby
    Presley
    Kinsley
    Peyton
    Delaney
Also, I’m kinda surprised at how many of the names you listed have been on “my list” at some point. Notably Imogen, Rory, Beatrix, Meredith, Piper, and Maeve. I never really saw the connection between them.

  2. Tatum and Greer go hand-in-hand for me, but not for the nicest reason. It’s because they’re both surnames-as-first names found on women that I find unbelievably unattractive. I love your suggestions of Maeve, Beatrix, Miriam, Bryony, Astrid, Hazel, Imogen….all are a minium of 10,000,000% better than Tatum!

  3. Astrid and Harper were my first instinct. Otherwise:
    Arden
    Audra
    Carson
    Charis
    Ellis
    Evelyn
    Malin
    Piper
    Ramona
    Rowan
    Simone
    Tamsin
    Tanis
    Teagan
    Thalia
    Vita
    Vivien

  4. I know two little girls (sisters) who are called Tatum and Talia… I think those names sound really nice together

  5. Oh my goodness, I misread the question…it’s for a name *instead* of Tatum, not for one to go *with* Tatum. My mistake! I still like Talia, although I like Julie’s spelling ‘Thalia’ (is it still pronounced the same though, not sure)

From the list, I think the names Kendall, Piper and Quinn have the same sort of feel as Tatum – names that work as surnames but are still feminine. Also, I love the names Astrid, Imogen and Maeve!

  6. my sons name is tatumn rylee everett while considering names for his sister i came up with chaning teagan leigh / emerson bridelle wren / adelade vivica maeve / luna starr rosemount we ended up going with adelade vivica maeve
