Babies get gang names in New Zealand

According to a 2002 article in the New Zealand Herald, some members of the Mighty Mongrel Mob — a New Zealand gang that has been around since the 1960s — have given their children gang-related names.

One man, for instance, named his child Triple M Rogue — “short for Mighty Mongrel Mob, rogue chapter.”

Another man, whose surname is Ford, named his children Customline, Fairlane, and Mainline after Ford V8 vehicles (which have long been associated with the Mob). He also changed his own name from James to “James Triple M.”

Update, Nov. 2010: Customline Ford, 21, is in the news again: “Police were last night hunting for a Customline Ford – the man, not a car – who is the son of one of the country’s most notorious gang leaders.” (Source)
