A reader named Michelle has a son named Saylor Dorian. She’s expecting a baby girl in May and would like some name suggestions. She says:
We originally picked shiloh for a girl but we aren’t liking how popular it’s getting [due to a celebrity finding it first..grrr] we want a unique name that’s still ‘easy on the ears’ as in easy to get used to. I try to stay away from the too feminine popular vowel names like ava, bella, etc… though we like them we don’t want a trendy name like piper, stella, etc…
We are currently tossing around names like vega, remy…. though what i loved about shiloh was that O ending.. but we are open to whatever.
First let’s try to come up some more o-endings. How about:
Callisto Calypso Clio Flo (Flora/Florence) Jo (Josie/Josephine) Juno | Leo (Leona) Margot Marlow Meadow Mo (Maureen) Willow |
And here are some other names that came to mind:
Audra Briar Darcy Dylan Emery Fiona Gillian Greer | Heidi Ione Jaya Lotus Lyra Mina Morgan Nadia | Naomi Nova Phoebe Rory Tess Violet Vita Zillah |
Which of the above do you like best for Saylor’s sister? What other girl names would you suggest to Michelle?
Theo/Theodora and Doro/Dorothy for the O collection.
Since they liked Shiloh, maybe another place name with similar significance?
I’d suggest Schuyler, but I think it’s too close to Saylor.
Nancy nailed most of the “oh” end sound names already… (Nicely done, Nancy!) But here are a couple of out-there ones I came up with.
Alecto (Greek mythology)
Charo (which is apparently a nickname for Rosario)
Cho (like in Harry Potter!… yeah, probably too weird to use)
Cleo
Coco (which could be a nickname for something like Courtney, Colleen, Corinne, or Constance)
Dido (Roman mythology)
Jojo (which could be a nickname for something like Josephine)
Leto (Greek mythology)
Margaux
Rosario
Nancy, you’ve got the creativity. Nice list of unique baby names!
Congratulations to Michelle! [I like this name :) ]
I personally like Jo, just like Emmy Jo (Yahoo Answer’s best baby name answerer).
Personally, I do really good care of naming baby, specially when uniqueness is demanded, so that the name should not have any spelling confusion and the name remain respectable (kids used to make fun with names).
Therefore, I guess Jo is more better than Mo.
The othername which is somewhat common (but not so common) but i personally like is Mia short, easy and easy to call and without spelling-confusion.
Thanks for the ideas/suggestions, all!
@C in DC – I hadn’t even thought about the significance angle with Shiloh. Great idea. There’s Bethel, Havilah, Jordan, Samaria, and plenty of other biblical place names that could work.
thank you so much for all your suggestions! it helped get me thinking. i love marlow- my good friend is having a girl in june and naming her marlo otherwise i may have used it! i also have considered greer and emery and juno if she was born in june. meadow and ione are really pretty and i did like that shiloh had a hebrew meaning to it. anyway
our daughter was born may 19th and we named her clover maybelle!
we loved the sound and uniqueness of clover and it’s also my husband’s initials with ‘love’ in the middle. her initials CMR are also the same as my husbands. may because she was due/born in may and belle because my family calls me that.
i’m already brainstorming names for the 3rd baby we will have to carry on the trend of being very unique- i may try to find another name that’s a noun as well…
thanks!
