Some awesomeness to start your week…
That post on Makgiber from a while back made me wonder–has MacGyver ever been used as a baby name in the U.S.?
Yup, it has. Five or more U.S. baby boys were named MacGyver during the following years:
- 1989 – 6 baby boys named MacGyver
- 1990 – 6 baby boys named MacGyver
- 1991 – 7 baby boys named MacGyver
- 1992 – 9 baby boys named MacGyver
- 1993 – 5 baby boys named MacGyver
- 1995 – 5 baby boys named MacGyver
- 2006 – 7 baby boys named MacGyver
And the name was likely bestowed in other years as well. Just not enough times in any of those years to make the SSA’s public list.
MacGyver has to be the best nontraditional baby name of all time. Seriously. If you’re gonna go unique, go MacGyver. How could you not like a person with this name? He could fix anything. (With just duct tape!) And he’d be the only kid in the neighborhood who could rock a mullet properly.
The only name I can think of that might be cooler than MacGyver is Chucknorris. I have yet to come across a baby named Chucknorris, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed…
This is too funny. Although can you imagine these poor kids will be teased ruthlessly about the SNL skits. If I see any Chucknorris babies running around, you’ll be the first person I contact about it!
-shudders- Nononono, no Chucknorris! MacGyver all the way!
I know a McIver.
People call him MacGyver all the time. He was born well before the show was ever on TV…
My real name is MacGyver I swear to God if you know anyone else please post
We named our son MacGyver. He’s a teenager and loves his name. Only problem we’ve seen so far is not being able to get an account on facebook. They were making us jump through hoops, so we gave up on it.
@Donna – The same thing happened to me on Quora. Someone at headquarters apparently didn’t believe “Nancy Man” could be anything but a slang expression. I didn’t have to jump through too many hoops to get the account activated, but having someone question my name was certainly irritating.
I found that I had so much in common with him that when I was the right age I had my name change for resons I won’t go into. But know that peolpe here in england don’t know how to spell or say the name correctly.
I now love my name and .
p.s. thank I may be only girl
