3 Ethiopian babies named for election

On May 23, 2010, national parliamentary elections were held in Ethiopia. Three babies born that day were given election-themed names:

  1. Mengist, “Government” (boy)
  2. Merach, “Voter” (girl)
  3. Mercha, “Election” (girl)

Mengist and Merach were born inside polling stations. Both of their mothers “still cast their ballots with the help of other voters and were in good condition.”

Mercha’s “mother went into labour in a polling station but gave birth in a nearby home.” I’m not sure if she ever got around to casting a ballot.
