In October of 1932, a baby boy was born to Mrs. Kaethe Schernig while she was aboard the German ocean liner SS General von Steuben.
The ship was the namesake of Continental Army officer General Friedrich von Steuben, so the baby was named Friedrich Schernig in honor of von Steuben as well.
