111 Minimalist Baby Names

minimalist, short, trendy, baby names

Years ago, I wrote a post with some naming tips for minimalists. But — as Abby of Appellation Mountain astutely pointed this out in her comment to that post — “minimalism” as applied to baby names could be about capturing a namestyle just as much as it could be about reflecting a lifestyle.

So today I’m giving minimalism another go. This time around, though, it’ll be a list of baby names that fall somewhere between short/simple and modern/stylish.

All of these names have made gains recently (Hank and Linus included!). For more details on usage, click through to see the popularity graphs.

What are your thoughts on minimalist-style baby names? Will you be using one? (Have you used one already?)

Popular Baby Names in New Zealand, 2018

According to New Zealand’s Department of Internal Affairs, the most popular baby names in the country in 2018 were Charlotte and Oliver.

Here are New Zealand’s top 10 girl names and top 10 boy names of 2018:

Girl Names
1. Charlotte, 233 baby girls
2. Isla, 229
3. Olivia, 211
4. Amelia, 205
5. Harper, 193
6. Ella, 192
7. Isabella, 191
8. Emily, 186
9. Mia, 180 (tie)
10. Ava, 180 (tie)

Boy Names
1. Oliver, 293 baby boys
2. Jack, 273
3. Noah, 243
4. Leo, 221
5. Hunter, 207 (tie)
6. George, 207 (tie)
7. William, 204
8. Lucas, 202
9. James, 198
10. Mason, 196

In the girls’ top 10, Ella and Isabella replace Mila (now 13th) and Sophie (now 17th).

In the boys’ top 10, Leo replaces Arlo (now 18th).

Baby names that were rejected last year include Heaven-Princezz-Star, Majestee-Honours, and Royale-Bubz.

New Zealand also released a set of Maori baby name rankings (topped by Mia and Nikau), but this kicked off a debate about the classification of Maori names, as many of the names listed (e.g., Mia, Nina, Aria, Ari) have other potential derivations.

In 2017, NZ’s top two names were same.

Initials that Spell Names

In June of 1982, the Toledo Blade ran a short article about two local brothers who “enjoy the distinction of having initials which spell their names.” One was Thomas Owen Matzinger (T.O.M.), the other was James Irvin Matzinger (J.I.M.). Their dad Mike said it was “just as well” that he didn’t have any more kids, because he couldn’t think of any other sets of names to fit the pattern.

My guess is that Mike was joking, because there are several other sets of initials that could work with an M-surname like Matzinger, one of which, T.I.M., is just a letter away from T.O.M.

In fact, there are at least a couple of combinations that would work with every type of surname.

So today, in honor of the Matzingers of Toledo, I’ve come up with a long list of name-spelling initials. They’re sorted by third initial (that is, the first letter of the last name) so you can scroll straight to the set that matches up with your own surname.

Enjoy!

Popular Maori Baby Names, 2015

According to the New Zealand Department of Internal Affairs and the Maori Language Commission (Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Maori), the country’s most popular Maori names during the second half of 2014 and the first half of 2015 were Maia and Nikau.

Here are the top 10 Maori girl names and boy names of 2014/2015:

Girl Names Boy Names
1. Maia
2. Manaia
3. Anahera
4. Ana
5. Aroha
6. Kaia
7. Hana
8. Ataahua
9. Tia
10. Kora
1. Nikau
2. Ari
3. Manaia
4. Wiremu
5. Kauri
6. Mikaere
7. Rawiri
8. Ihaia
9. Kai
10. Manaaki

The top 10 lists above are fairly different from the Maori baby name rankings of 2013. (I don’t believe a 2014 list was released.)

One confusing difference is the absence of Aria and Ariana. Were they reclassified as non-Maori? Otherwise, Aria and Ariana should have come in first and third on this list, given how popular they’ve been in New Zealand overall lately.

Also confusing is the fact that the rankings don’t refer to corresponding periods of time. The 2013 list covers April 2012 to March 2013, whereas the 2015 list covers July 2014 to June 2015.

Maia and Nikau weren’t among New Zealand’s top ten baby names of 2015, but they did appear in the top 100: Maia was ranked 34th for girls, Nikau 97th for boys.
