How Did Virginia Dare Get Her Name?

Detail of "Baptism of Virginia Dare" (1880) by Henry Howe
From “Baptism of Virginia Dare” (1880)
by Henry Howe
In 1584, Queen Elizabeth I of England granted Sir Walter Raleigh a charter for the colonization of a section of North America. In honor of the “Virgin Queen,” the settlement would be called the Colony of Virginia.

Raleigh sent several expeditions to the New World over the next few years. One of the expeditions, which arrived at Roanoke Island on July 22, 1587, included a group of 120 English settlers. Among these settlers were married couple Ananias and Eleanor Dare, who were expecting a baby at the time.

Their baby was born less than a month later, on August 18. She was the first child born to English parents in North America.

The following Sunday she was baptized “Virginia” in honor of the Colony of Virginia.

No one knows what became of Virginia Dare or the rest of the English settlers of Roanoke Island, as the site was found to be mysteriously deserted in 1590. But Virginia Dare is well-remembered today thanks to the many places and products that have since been named after her, such Dare County, North Carolina — the present-day location of Roanoke Island.

Oddball English Names, 17th and 18th Centuries

One of the sources I used for yesterday’s post on Ono Titchiner was a book full of 17th and 18th century marriage records from Surrey.

In the introduction, the author listed some of the more notable names to be found in the book:

There are some curious and uncommon Christian names from Biblical and Classical sources; amongst those of females, Achsa, Adeliza, Aphara, Anastasia, Aquila, Avarillar, Bathana, Bedia, Bethia, Cassandra, Caroline-Shepherdess, Celeste, Clementia, Damaris, Dionisia, Dufiner, Dulcibella, Eleanor, Emmaritta, Emlin, Euphemia, Grachauna, Gratitude, Hephzibah, Israel, Jacobinea, Jaminia, Juliana, Kimbra, Melior, Milbrough, Pamelia, Parthenia, Paterniller, Pleasant-Furs, Protesia, Silvestria, Sina, Statira, Tamar, Tempearance, Theodosia, Tryphena, “Virgin” [Price]; and amongst males those of Ananias, Bivel, Calverley, Chrusophilus, Demetrius, Deodatus, Derik, Emmet, Eusebius, Ezekiel, Fretwill, Gershom, Haman, Haseldine [Crab-tree], Jonah, Lazarus, Nazareth, “Offspring” [Brown], Ono, Prew, Purchas, Redhead [Eagle], Rulove, Sills [Gibbons], Theophilus, Truth, Uphill, Ward, Wintz, Zacheus, Zenas, Zeuler.

It’s interesting to note that a few of the above (like Juliana and Jonah) are now commonplace.

And I could imagine a few others (Tamar? Lazarus?) becoming trendy in the near future.

Which of these names do you like best?

You’re looking for a cool, uncommon saint name…but you haven’t had much luck.

Augustine’s not up your alley. Francis is too old fashioned. And how many people are really going to get “Aloysius” right on the first try?

I scoured the Roman Martyrology for 60 male saint names that might appeal to modern parents.

Because nearly all of the names refer to multiple saints, I didn’t bother with extra details like feast days. I did throw in a few nickname ideas, though.

Did you see any names you liked?

And, do you know of any good ones that I missed?

Update, June 2014: Just posted about another unique male saint name, Cono.

And here are explanations for a few of the above:

  • Bjorn was given a boost by tennis great Bjorn Borg, who was ranked #1 in the world several times in the late ’70s and early ’80s.
  • The surge of Ciji can be attributed to Knot’s Landing character Ciji Dunne.
  • Gidget grew in popularity thanks to mid-1960s TV series Gidget, starring Sally Field. The series was based on the 1957 book Gidget, the Little Girl with Big Ideas by Frederick Kohner. Kohner’s daughter Kathy had been nicknamed Gidget — a blend of the words “girl” and “midget” — by surfers in Malibu.
  • Illya, a Slavic form of Elijah, was popularized by 1960s TV show The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (1964-1968), which featured main characters named Illya Nickovetch Kuryakin and Napoleon Solo. During the two years that Illya ranked, Napoleon also became slightly more popular.
  • Lindbergh was given a lift by famous aviator Charles Lindbergh.
  • The rise of Ridge was influenced by The Bold and the Beautiful character Ridge Forrester. (Alas, Ridge’s brother Thorne did not manage to inspire a similar baby name following.) I’ve interviewed a Ridge, if you’re interested.
  • Finally, Jenniffer ranked 972nd in 1972, and then 973rd in 1973. How crazy is that?
