(Update, 1/8/2015: The 2014 list for PEI just came out, and it included a link to the 2013 data…which is exactly the same as the above. So it looks like PEI doesn’t release finalized lists.)

Baby Names Needed (Soon!) – Boy & Girl Twins

A reader named Nate just sent me this note:

We just had a set of twins arrive about 2 months early. They are doing well in the NICU, but needless to say, we weren’t quite prepared for the arrival and haven’t got names picked out.

We need both a boy and girl name. We have a 2 year old daughter named Parker Rose. We like the different but familiar feel of Parker and don’t have a strong preference for or aversion to unisex names for girls. Current names on our lists – Boy: Heath, Everett, Tristan, Beckett; Girl: Piper, Kendall, Ansley, Charlotte, Sloan.

Any more ideas along those lines? (Last name starts with “J”)

I’m so glad the twins are doing well. I hope that continues!

Of the names on the shortlist right now, I might cross off Piper and Ansley. Piper because it’s so close to Parker, Ansley because I feel like a lot of people would mispronounce it.

Personally, my favorites are Charlotte for the baby girl and either Heath or Everett for the baby boy.

I thought the following names might be of interest as well:

Audrey
Calvin
Carson
Cecily
Darcy
Emmett
Finn
Gray
Grayson
Keane
Lane
Luke
Max
Merritt
Micah
Miles
Owen
Quinn
Reece/Reese
Violet

(I didn’t try to sort by gender because so many of these go both ways nowadays.)

Which of the names above do you like best for the twins? What other names would you suggest to Nate?

Name Needed for Baby Boy

Chelsey and her husband Ryan are expecting a baby boy “any time now” and would like some help choosing a name for him. Here’s what Chelsey says:

We had a name idea for the majority of my pregnancy that we were keeping a secret. A few weeks ago, we found another name we liked and then decided not to name him until he debuts. But now we aren’t feeling a pull towards either as much as we were and find ourselves looking through names and feeling overwhelmed and underwhelmed at the same time…nothing is sticking out!!

We want a name that isn’t too crazy or unique but isn’t exactly popular either. I’m pulled more towards short and sweet names while my husband likes longer names and more unique names – that give a good nickname.

The name we have had during the pregnancy is Hudson Gray – which I still really like.

Our newer favorite is Otto Emerson.

They also like the names Jude, Dallas, Roman, Oliver and Henry. Names that are off the table include Owen and any rhyming names (e.g. Cohen, Rowan) as Owen is the name of the family dog.

This baby is their first child, and his surname will be an M-name similar to Moyer.

Here are some ideas to start us off:

Beckett
Broderick
Calvin
Dane
Dawson
Desmond
Dixon
Dominic
Douglas
Elliott
Emery
Emmett
Franklin
Gideon
Griffin
Jonah
Lance
Lane
Leon
Lincoln
Reece
Reid
Reuben
Seth
Silas
Simon
Thaddeus
Theo(dore)
Winston
Wyatt

(All but two are outside the top 100.)

What other boy names would you suggest to Chelsey? How about name combinations?

Baby Names Needed for Triplets

A reader named Skylar is expecting triplets in June. She writes:

I do not know the gender of the babies yet as my husband and I have decided to keep it a surprise. The triplets will be joining and older brother Beckett Wade (Wade after my brother) and Britton Pearl (Pearl after my great grandmother, also my middle name). I am looking for boys and girls names to name the triplets. I do not like common names, I would prefer something trendy to pair with family middle names.

I rarely get requests for trendy names, so this e-mail really stood out.

One great place to look for trendy (or soon-to-be trendy) names is the SSA’s Change in Popularity page, which lists names that increased in popularity from 2008 to 2009. Here are some of the names on that list:

Emmett
Jasper
Paxton
Ryker
Graham
Leon
Silas
Abram
Arabella
Norah
Penelope
Harper
Willow
Lyla
Melina
Daphne

The SSA’s list doesn’t include names that didn’t make the top 500, though, so here are a few more names (from a bit lower down in the rankings) that also increased in popularity from 2008 to 2009:

Knox
Kellan
Archer
Hayes
Daxton
Lucian
Dexter
Uriah
Harlow
Gemma
Milan
Nylah
Myra
Millie
Leona
Catalina

Do you like any of the above with Beckett and Britton? What other names would you suggest? How about name combinations?

Baby Names Needed – Sci-Fi Names for Boy/Girl Twins

A reader named Sam is having twins (a boy and a girl) in several weeks, but hasn’t yet found names for them. Sam writes:

My partner and I already have a 3 year old boy called Ryker after Will Riker on Star Trek Next Generation, as we both like Sci Fi.

The first thing that popped into my head is Robert Schnakenberg’s book Sci-Fi Baby Names. Google Books offers a nice preview.

The book seems to focus on names from TV and movies, so let’s balance that out with some ideas from literature:

  • Arthur, for Arthur C. Clarke, who wrote 2001: A Space Odyssey.
  • Douglas, for Douglas Adams, who wrote The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.
  • Isaac, for Isaac Asimov.
  • Julia or Julian, for Jules Verne.
  • Philip or Philippa, for Philip K. Dick.
  • Richard, for Richard Matheson, who wrote I Am Legend.
  • Ursula, for Ursula Le Guin.

Names that are more like Ryker in terms of style include:

Boys Girls
Beckett
Cash
Drake
Easton
Everett
Gavin
Jude
Leo
Max
Phoenix
Pierce
Sawyer
Alexa
Fiona
Harper
Jetta
Kira
Luna
Maya
Phoebe
Sage
Sienna
Stella
Violet

What other sci-fi names can you come up with for Sam’s twins? And what other names do you think sound good with Ryker?

Baby Name Needed – Boy Name for Brother of Channing and Deacon

A reader named Heath is expecting his third child, a boy, and would like some name suggestions. Here’s what he says:

I’m Heath, wife is Aspen, daughter is Channing and son is Deacon so we’re looking for a name that most kids won’t have but also want something that isn’t feminine, will get him picked on or doesn’t sound like we are trying too hard.

Here are some of the names they’ve been considering:

My favorite is Justice but that has no chance with my wife. She likes Ridge but I quickly vetoed that. Her favorite is Easton but I was looking for something more. Some others that we have thought about is Beckett, Kingston or Tate but again I’m not overly thrilled.

Many of the names above come from surnames, so that’s what I focused on as I brainstormed:

Baron
Bridger
Brogan
Corbin
Dax
Edison
Evander
Ezra
Felix
Finn
Fletcher
Franklin
Fulton
Garrison
Graham
Griffin
Grover
Hawthorn
Jasper
Lachlan

Nash
Nigel
Owen
Paxton
Pierce
Quincy
Ramsey
Roscoe
Royce
Sawyer
Stone
Thaddeus
Thatcher
Tavish
Tobias
Trent
Vaughn
Walker
Winston
Zane

Which of the above do you like best with Channing and Deacon? What other names would you suggest to Heath?

Baby Name Needed – Name for Hayden’s Little Brother or Sister

A reader named Angela is expecting her second baby (gender unknown). She sent me a lot of helpful information, so I’ve broken it down into main points:

  • The baby’s middle name will be Patrick (if a boy) or Josephine (if a girl).
  • The baby’s surname will start with P.
  • She and her husband like the name Abigail, but it may soon be taken by friends.
  • They also like the name Caleb, but the initials CPP sound like “see pee pee.” They want to avoid names and initials that invite teasing.
  • Ideally, the first name will be something that can be shortened to a nickname.
  • Angela likes “literature or movie referenced names.”
  • Angela’s husband likes “uncomplicated English or Christian names (he’s Adam…his brothers are Benjamin and Noah).”

Their first son is named Hayden Adam.

Here are the names I came up with, along with a few literature/film references. Ladies first:
