I’m not sure when the finalized version of PEI’s 2013 list will be released, but I’ll be on the lookout for it. (Update, 1/8/2015: The 2014 list for PEI just came out, and it included a link to the 2013 data…which is exactly the same as the above. So it looks like PEI doesn’t release finalized lists.)

Babies Named After Jersey Shore?

Teri Wilde, a nurse in northern Kentucky, was asked which baby names she’s seen a lot of lately. For boys, she recalled “seeing a lot of “rhyming names” like Brayden, Caden, Aiden and Jaden.” No surprise there. But one of the first girl names she mentioned? Jersey. That answer surprised me quite a bit.

Jersey was originally just a Channel Island, but since then it’s become a type of cloth, a type of shirt, a breed of cattle, a U.S. state, and, via the state, one of the most ridiculous reality TV shows of all time.

Were any of those baby girls in Kentucky named after Jersey Shore, do you think?

Even better, do you think the show, which debuted in December of 2009, had any impact on usage of the name nationally? It’s never been a top-1,000 name — could Jersey Shore change that?

Below is the most recent data we have on Jersey. (The numbers for 2010 will be released later this month!)

  • 2009 – 221 baby girls, 8 baby boys named Jersey
  • 2008 – 219 baby girls, 6 baby boys named Jersey
  • 2007 – 217 baby girls, 11 baby boys named Jersey
  • 2006 – 225 baby girls, 14 baby boys named Jersey
  • 2005 – 210 baby girls, 8 baby boys named Jersey

How Many Baby Girls Got -Ayden Names in 2009?

I did an analysis of baby boys with -ayden names last weekend and discovered that roughly 5% of the boys born in the U.S. last year have a name that rhymes with Jayden.

This weekend, I did the same analysis for baby girls. I sat down with the SSA’s baby name list for 2009, picked out all the female -ayden names, and counted both the number of the variants and the number of babies with each variant.

Here’s what I found, sorted by ending:

TOTAL 10,113 96

Of the (at least) 2,001,968 baby girls born last year, (at least) 10,113 were given an -ayden name. That’s about 0.5%, or about 1 in 200.

Of the 20,036 girl names on the SSA’s list, 96 are -ayden names. That’s also about 0.5%.

These percentages are a lot lower than the 4.9% and the 1.9% we saw last week, but still impressive. A total of 10,113 girls would theoretically put the -ayden name-group somewhere between #12 Addison (10,567) and #13 Alexis (9,839) in the rankings.

TOTAL 102,992 267

Of the (at least) 2,095,910 baby boys born last year, (at least) 102,992 were given an -ayden name. That’s over 4.9%–about 1 in 20.

Of the 14,404 boy names on the SSA’s list, 267 are -ayden names. That’s 1.9%–about 1 in 50.

Do these numbers surprise you?

Update: Wondering how many baby girls or how many babies overall received an -ayden name in 2009?

[Disclaimer: I’m assuming all of the variants above rhyme with Jayden, but I can’t make any guarantees about pronunciation. Also, I didn’t count the following: variants with 3 syllables, variants with 2-vowel endings (e.g. -dien, -deyn), variants that look like Eden and Madden, and (possible variants?) Ajdin and Dredin.]

UPDATE: Is the -Ayden Craze Over?

The Next Big -den Name – Bladen, Dreyden, Graden, Payden

Jayden, Aidan, Caden, Braden and Hayden (and their many variants) are well-established on the list of the top U.S. baby names. Zayden and Raiden have joined the rankings recently as well.

Which “-den” name will be next to pop up on the list?

Well, the Sacred Heart Medical Center in Eugene, Oregon welcomed a baby Graden on April 5 and a baby Dreyden on May 2. Benefis Healthcare in Great Falls, Montana welcomed a baby Bladen on May 22 and a baby Payden on March 11. Those are some possibilities. And I wouldn’t be too surprised to see a Sladen, Tayden or Treyden on the list, either.

It’s likely that Xayden will show up at some point, but I’m not sure it should count as an entirely new “-den” name. (If you pronounce the X like a Z, it’s a variant of Zayden; if you pronounce the Z like an H, it’s a variant of Hayden.)

So which “-den” would you put your money on? Why?

Update: Just spotted a Blayden, born on May 6th at St. Joseph Hospital in Washington state.
