Unique Welsh Name: y-Felin

Welsh singer/songwriter Cerys Matthews and her husband welcomed their first child, a baby girl, in August of 2003.

They named her Glenys Pearl y-Felin.

That interesting “y-Felin” part is Welsh for “the mill.” It refers to an historic mill in the village of Trefin, which is where Matthews’s parents live.

The mill had been in operation for hundreds of years before closing in 1918. It was later memorialized in the well-known Welsh poem “Melin Trefin” by Welsh poet/preacher William Williams (1875-1968).
