What Would You Name the Two Frenchmen?

The image below, of the Boulevard du Temple in Paris, was captured in early 1838 by Louis Daguerre, inventor of the daguerreotype.

It may be the earliest surviving photograph of a person. Two people, actually. Both are in the lower left:

Daguerreotype: Boulevard du Temple

Here’s a close-up:

Boulevard du Temple, detail

The standing man is getting his shoe shined, and the other man (partially obscured) is doing the shoe-shining.

Of all the people on the sidewalk that day, these were the only two to stay still long enough (about 10 minutes) to be captured in the image.

Now for the fun part!

What would you name these two Frenchmen?

Let’s pretend you’re writing a book set in Paris in the 1830s, and these are two of your characters. What names would you give them?

Here’s a long list of traditional French male names, to get you started:

Gender Test: Which Boy Names Are Not Quite Boy Names?

Time for the annual masculinity test!

Now, when I say “masculinity,” I’m not talking about a name’s image or associations. I’m talking specifically about how the name is being used nowadays.

The question I’m asking is: Which boy names were given to a significant proportion of baby girls last year?

If you’re looking for a name that will clearly identify your son as a boy, the answer will help you avoid names that could cause gender confusion.

This time around, I’m making the masculinity test even simpler by sticking to a pass/fail system. So, if a boy name was…

  • Given to baby boys at least 80% of the time, the grade is pass. (But less than 90% of the time: warning.)
  • Given to baby boys less than 80% of the time, the grade is fail.

I analyzed all of the boy names on the top 1,000 list. Of these 1,000 names, 71 failed and 43 got a warning. (Scroll down to see lists of the failed and warning names only.)

Names Needed for Twin Baby Girls

A reader named Grace would like some help naming her twin girls, due in a couple of months. She and her husband John already have three boys, Jackson, Samuel and Lucas.

So far, their favorite girl names are Juliet, Isla, Susannah and Norah. But they’re also considering a family name:

We would love to honor my mother, Denise Marie, but we despise both names. I would love some ideas on how to use that without actually using those names.

For the middle spots, they’re aiming for virtue names. They already have Honor picked out, and “[i]f there is another virtue name you would suggest so they both had one that would be great!”

Their last name is similar to Cawston.

On the current favorites…
I like all of the current favorites. The pairing I like best, though, is Juliet and Susannah. I just think they sound good together. I also like how they can both be shortened, just like the boys’ names — Jack, Sam, Luke, Jules & Sue (or Julie & Susie).

On incorporating Denise Marie…
One way to incorporate Denise Marie would be to find a name that features the sounds of both Denise and Marie (especially those D- and M-sounds). Names with these sounds include Madeline, Demetria, Dominique/Domenica, Damaris, Adamina, Amadea and Idamae.

Another approach would be to use initials — either the initials “D. M.” for one twin or a D-name for twin #1 and an M-name for twin #2. Some possibilities (beyond the names above) include Dahlia, Daisy, Damiana, Daphne, Dara, Delphine, Diana, Dina, Dora, Dorothy and Drusilla for D-names and Mara, Marian, Marlene, Martina, Mina, Mirabelle, Miranda, Miriam, Molly, Monica and Mona for M-names.

On virtuous middles…
My first thought was Mercy, because it sounds a lot like Marie. Other virtue names that might make nice middles are Amity, Charity, Clementine/Clemency, Hope, Joy, Patience, Peace/Pax, Temperance and Verity.

Now it’s your turn! Which of Juliet, Isla, Susannah and Norah do you like best for twins? What names can you come up with to honor Denise Marie? Which virtue names do you like best for middle names?

Baby Name Needed – Girl Name for Twin Sister

A reader named Ayelet is expecting twins. She and her husband won’t be finding out the babies’ genders ahead of time, so they’d like to be prepared with two boy names and two girl names.

So far they’ve got August and Dominic for the boy names and Celia for one of the girl names. Once they select a second girl name they’ll be all set.

They’d like something that isn’t common (i.e. outside of the top 500). They’re considering Aliyah, Angelie, Aurelia, Eva, Isla, Juliet and Valentina, but Aliena is the current favorite:

The name we love is Aliena. She is a character in Ken Follett’s novel “The Pillars of the Earth,” which is set in twelfth-century England. But we can’t get past the “alien” in the name. I have an Alienor in my family tree, so I thought about going the Eleanor route, but I don’t like that spelling; I think I’m in love with that “Ali” sequence.

The baby’s surname will start and end with the letter n, like Nelson.

First, about Aliena. It’s a pretty name, but I’d also be worried about that “alien” association. I don’t know if I’d risk it as a first name, but it might work well as a middle.

The only alternative I can come up with is Eliana, which is an (unrelated) anagram of Aliena. But it’s ranked 193rd and climbing, so it might be a bit too popular.

Here are some other possibilities. None of these are currently in the top 500, and the ones with asterisks have a-l-i sequences.

Finally, there’s the option of simply feminizing one of the boy names. August could become Augusta or Augustina; Dominic could become Dominique or Dominica.

Which of the above girl names do you like best with August, Dominic and/or Celia? What other girl names would you suggest to Ayelet?

Baby Names Needed – Girl Names for Fourth Baby

A reader named Klaudia is expecting her fourth child, a baby girl, and she’d like some help brainstorming for a first and a middle name. Here’s what Klaudia says:

We like…unusual names. I mean, not names that sound “made-up” but real names. At least, not trendy, popular names.

Juniper was at the top of their list, but then a friend used it, so now they’re back to the drawing board.

A few more details:

  • The first name should have 3 syllables.
  • The middle name should have 2 syllables and start with an n.
  • The surname will be a one-syllable s-name.
  • The older siblings are named Kendra Darlene, Carmen Nellie and Matteo Kendell.

I think Juniper paired with an n-name would have sounded nice, so I tried to come up with a lot of name suggestions that also include the letter n:

Acacia
Adelaide
Adina
Allegra
Angela
Annabelle
Belinda
Bethany
Bettina
Bianca
Cynthia
Daniela
Dominique
Felicia
Francesca
Genevieve
Henriette
Honora
Juliet

Lucinda
Lydia
Marcella
Melinda
Minerva
Miranda
Monica
Priscilla
Ramona
Regina
Sabrina
Simona
Sunniva
Susanna
Sylvia
Valerie
Rosemary
Venetia
Winifred
Yolanda

None of the above are currently in the top 100.

Now middles. It’s tricky to pick a middle if the first isn’t already in place, but here are some possibilities. Names on the left have a stress on the first syllable, names on the right have a stress on the second syllable.

Nina
Nita
Nola
Norah
Norma
Nadine
Nanette
Nicole
Noelle
Noreen

What first names would you suggest for the sibling of Kendra, Carmen and Matteo? What middle names would you pair with those first names?

Baby Name Needed – Middle Name for Leah

A reader named Nita is having a baby girl. The baby’s first name will be Leah, and Nita is looking for middle name suggestions that work with Leah. She writes:

We want it to start with a consonant and end in a consonant. Since the first name is pretty short, we’d like the middle name to be three or four syllables long. And please, not floral names. (And no names that sound like Beatrice/Beatrix, Margaret or Ursula.)

I think French names are a smart place to start, as many French names are fairly long and begin and end with consonant sounds.

Benjamine
Bernadette
Bernardine
Caroline
Celestine
Dominique
Felicienne
Gabrielle
Geraldine
Henriette
Josephine
Julienne
Juliette
Madeleine
Marcelline
Marianne
Micheline
Nicolette
Nicoline

Here are some other possibilities:

Gillian
Guinevere
Gwendolen
Harriet
Jennifer
Maribel
Marisol
Marybeth
Marylouise
Mehetabel
Meredith
Millicent
Miriam
Rosalind
Rosamund
Vivian
Winifred

Which of the above do you like best with Leah? What other middle names can you come up with for Nita?

Unisex Names of 2007 – Peyton, Finley, Dominique, Dakota

Last year, over 60 baby names ranked in the top 1,000 for both boys and girls.

Most of these names were much more popular for one gender than for the other. London, Morgan, Jamie and Harper were clear winners for the girls, for instance, and Logan, Micah, Charlie and Parker were used far more often for boys.

But some of the names were used about equally for both genders. These “most” unisex names (for lack of a better way to describe them) were:

Name Rank (m/f) Difference
Peyton 125/121 4
Finley 794/816 22
Dominique 783/752 31
Dakota 203/239 36
Jordan 45/100 55
Riley 109/52 57
Rowan 366/450 84

Names that came close to making the list were Kasey, Skyler, Jaylin and Devyn. (My cut-off was a difference of 100, and these four names were just over that limit.)

Also, keep in mind that this list doesn’t account for overall popularity. Dominique and Dakota are side-by-side above, but the name Dakota was given to 3,381 children last year, whereas only 653 were named Dominique.
