Russian baby names from 1982

That post on Yuri Gagarin reminded me of something. In 1982, Soviet newspaper Komsomolskaya Pravda reported that the most popular baby names in U.S.S.R. were Yelena* and Sergei. Other names registered that year (and translated into English) included:

  • Genius
  • Electron
  • Grace the Unwashed
  • Hooray for Yuri Gagarin

*Yelena happens to be the name of Yuri Gagarin’s firstborn daughter. His younger daughter is Galina.

Celebrity baby name: Ever Gabo

Actress Milla Jovovitch, 31, and her fiancé, filmmaker Paul Anderson, 42, had their first child — a baby girl — two days ago. They named their daughter Ever Gabo.

According to Milla’s blog:

the name Ever is a scottish boy’s name, Paul has scottish blood in him (not to mention two tartans in his family!) so we wanted to give her a name that reflected her “celtic” roots, while her middle name Gabo -pronounced “Gabeau”- is a mixture of my parents names! the first two letters are after my mom’s first name, Galina and the last two letters are after my dad’s first name Bogie!
