Looking for a surname-inspired baby name with a connection to Catholicism?

Here are more than 200 options, most of which come from Catholic Englishmen martyred during the 16th and 17th centuries.

Because the goal was to include as many realistic baby names as possible, I interpreted “surname” and “saint” liberally in some cases. Xavier is not technically a surname, for instance, and many of the folks below are not yet full-fledged saints.

The hyperlinked names will take you to popularity graphs.

Free Download: Weighted Decision Matrix for Baby Names

Free Download, Weighted Decision Matrix for Baby Names, from Nancy’s Baby Names

Need to narrow down your list of favorite baby names? See how they really stack up with a weighted decision matrix!

There are several ways to access this free spreadsheet:

Instructions are included in the file, but here’s a summary: you write in the traits you’re looking for in a baby name and “weight” each of those traits by importance. Then, you write in the baby names you’re considering and give each one some ratings. The spreadsheet will do the math and reveal which name best fits your criteria.

The file has two sheets — the first is blank, the second is filled out, as an example. (I randomly used the names Alexander, Zachary, Bartholomew, Heath, John, Ian, Xavier, Lucky, Walter and Maxwell on the example sheet.)

Let me know if you experience any problems with the spreadsheet and I’ll do my best to help you out.

If you find this spreadsheet helpful, please share it on Pinterest, Facebook, etc. Thanks!

(This is an updated version of one of the baby name spreadsheets I posted years ago. Last week I posted the new version of the paired comparison analysis.)

Baby Name Needed – Brother of Jett Royce

One of my readers is expecting a baby boy in a matter of days and she’d like some last-minute name suggestions.

The baby will have one older sibling, a brother named Jett Royce. The surname sounds like Adlard.

Jett’s given names are both quite short, so I’m going to stick to the pattern and suggest…

Blake
Brent
Caleb
Cole
Dale
Dane
Dax
Drake
Drew (or Andrew)
Finn
Grant
Gray
Heath
Hugh
Lance
Lane
Levi
Luke
Mark
Max
Neil
Noah
Owen
Pierce
Quinn
Rex
Tate
Tom (or Thomas)
Trent
Troy

Zane

Which of the above do you like best for Jett’s little brother? What other names would you suggest?

Baby Names Needed (Soon!) – Boy & Girl Twins

A reader named Nate just sent me this note:

We just had a set of twins arrive about 2 months early. They are doing well in the NICU, but needless to say, we weren’t quite prepared for the arrival and haven’t got names picked out.

We need both a boy and girl name. We have a 2 year old daughter named Parker Rose. We like the different but familiar feel of Parker and don’t have a strong preference for or aversion to unisex names for girls. Current names on our lists – Boy: Heath, Everett, Tristan, Beckett; Girl: Piper, Kendall, Ansley, Charlotte, Sloan.

Any more ideas along those lines? (Last name starts with “J”)

I’m so glad the twins are doing well. I hope that continues!

Of the names on the shortlist right now, I might cross off Piper and Ansley. Piper because it’s so close to Parker, Ansley because I feel like a lot of people would mispronounce it.

Personally, my favorites are Charlotte for the baby girl and either Heath or Everett for the baby boy.

I thought the following names might be of interest as well:

Audrey
Calvin
Carson
Cecily
Darcy
Emmett
Finn
Gray
Grayson
Keane
Lane
Luke
Max
Merritt
Micah
Miles
Owen
Quinn
Reece/Reese
Violet

(I didn’t try to sort by gender because so many of these go both ways nowadays.)

Which of the names above do you like best for the twins? What other names would you suggest to Nate?

Baby Names Needed for Fraternal Twins, Boy & Girl

A reader named Abby is expecting fraternal twins, a boy and a girl, in October. She and her husband already have a son named Leo Sebastian.

They’re aiming for vintage names (with kind of a quirky/British feel) that aren’t too popular. These are their favorites so far, top picks in italics.

Boy Names Girl Names
Her Picks: Edward (Teddy)
Henry
Jasper
Jude
Maxwell (Max)
Oliver
Alice
Elsa (Elsie)
Ivy
Juliet
Violet
His Picks: August (Auggie/Gus)
Dashiell (Dash)
Beatrix
Felicity
Matilda
Penelope (Nellie)
Ramona

Abby says, “He thinks mine are slightly boring, I think his are a tad too flamboyant.”

They’d like our opinions on two things:

  1. What other boy and girl names would we suggest?
  2. Out of the current favorites, what are the best pairings?

The twins’ surname will be similar to Waters.

Here are my thoughts…

1. First, name suggestions. Most of these names have a vintage feel, and none of are currently in the top 100 (though several are heading that way).

Boy Names Girl Names

I didn’t include any w-names, but I was tempted to throw in Willa and Winifred (Winnie). Maybe even Wilhelmina (Minnie).

2. Out of the current favorites, Henry and Penelope are the two I like best for twins. I also like Maxwell and Beatrix (because both have that quirky x).

What other names/pairings would you suggest to Abby?

Baby Name Needed – Boy Name for Brother of Channing and Deacon

A reader named Heath is expecting his third child, a boy, and would like some name suggestions. Here’s what he says:

I’m Heath, wife is Aspen, daughter is Channing and son is Deacon so we’re looking for a name that most kids won’t have but also want something that isn’t feminine, will get him picked on or doesn’t sound like we are trying too hard.

Here are some of the names they’ve been considering:

My favorite is Justice but that has no chance with my wife. She likes Ridge but I quickly vetoed that. Her favorite is Easton but I was looking for something more. Some others that we have thought about is Beckett, Kingston or Tate but again I’m not overly thrilled.

Many of the names above come from surnames, so that’s what I focused on as I brainstormed:

Baron
Bridger
Brogan

Which of the above do you like best with Channing and Deacon? What other names would you suggest to Heath?
