Top Baby Names in Massachusetts, 2007

According to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (via Boston.com), the most popular baby names in the state in 2007 were Ava and Ryan.

Here are Massachusetts’ top five girl names and top five boy names of 2007:

Girl NamesBoy names
1. Ava
2. Isabella
3. Sophia
4. Olivia
5. Emma
1. Ryan
2. Matthew
3. Michael
4. William
5. Jacob

Writer Amy Derjue found these results “pretty disappointing” — not a Brady, Randy, Kevin, Beckett, or Jacoby to be found among the top 5 boy names, despite the fact that 2007 was “such a banner year in sports.”

I can’t say I share her sense of disappointment, but I do think that, given Tom Brady’s popularity, Brady might have a shot at cracking the state-wide top 5 one day. Here’s how the name has fared in recent years, according to Social Security Administration data:

America Gets a Free Taco, Thanks to Jacoby

Baseball player Jacoby McCabe Ellsbury stole 2nd base during game 2 of the World Series (just a few hours ago), and now there will be free tacos for all as per Taco Bell’s “Steal a Base, Steal a Taco” deal:

A base has been stolen in the 2007 MLB World Series, now America gets a free taco. Run on down to any participating Taco Bell between 2pm and 5pm local on Tuesday, October 30th to get (1) free Crunchy Seasoned Beef Taco.

Jacoby’s first name has ranked among the top 1,000 U.S. baby names since the mid-1980s. This more or less shadows the surge in popularity of Jacob, which shot into the spotlight during the 1970s to become the reigning #1 name (since 1999).
