Popular and Unique Baby Names by State, 2018

Sampling of baby names that appeared in the SSA state-specific baby name data for one state only.

We know what the top names in the country were last year, but what about the top names in each state? Here’s the list, released just yesterday by the SSA. I’ve also included each state’s most popular unique names (i.e., names that only appeared in the data for that particular state).

A few final thoughts…

  • I love that Aurora is now #1 in Alaska. :)
  • What’s up with Wilma in Ohio? Nine baby girls is nearly a quarter (23%) of the total national usage. Interesting.
  • One of the other unique Utah boy names was Kaladin, which comes from a character in the Stormlight Archive book series by Utah-based fantasy writer Brandon Sanderson.

How about you — what are your thoughts/observations?

The Baby Name Kaleena

Kaleena in Love, Sidney
Love, Sidney characters Laurie, Sidney, and Patti
In October of 1981, NBC began airing a sitcom called Love, Sidney. It was the first show on American TV with a gay lead character (although Sidney’s homosexuality was largely downplayed).

Actors Tony Randall, Swoosie Kurtz and 8-year-old Kaleena Kiff played the three main characters Sidney, Laurie and Patti. Despite the ground-breaking nature of Randall’s character, it was Kiff who made the biggest impression on TV viewers (if you go by the baby name charts, at least).

The baby name Kaleena went from being given to fewer than 5 baby girls in 1980 to being given to dozens, then hundreds, of baby girls over the next few years:

  • 1986: 79 baby girls named Kaleena
  • 1985: 82 baby girls named Kaleena
  • 1984: 101 baby girls named Kaleena
  • 1983: 341 baby girls named Kaleena
  • 1982: 270 baby girls named Kaleena
  • 1981: 41 baby girls named Kaleena [debut]
  • 1980: unlisted (fewer than 5 baby girls)

The name Kalina also got a boost in the early ’80s.

Kaleena was fifth-highest debut of 1981, after Fallon, Toccara, Nastassia and Falon. Sixth through tenth were Yalitza, Natassia, Yuliana, Shiona, and a 5-way tie between Dynasty, Jadyn, Laiza, Shambrica and Tijwana.

What are your thoughts on the name Kaleena?

P.S. A name-related tweet from Kaleena Kiff herself: “Everyone on our set is called Fergus, Angus, or Fraser. I must be shooting in Glasgow. #LegendofBarney” That hashtag refers to the upcoming movie The Legend of Barney Thomson, which is set in Scotland and features a character by the name of Cemolina (played by Emma Thompson).

Trendy Girl Names (Game)

A few weeks ago, Deadspin posted a list of trendy girl names.

The reader who contributed the list said they were the names of girls participating in a “tumble and cheer” event. He didn’t mention their ages.

Here’s the list:

Cambree
Karli
Baylee
Jaslynn
Maccie
Balei
Addison
Izzabelle
Kasey
Jadyn
Abigayle
Kinley
Kinsley
Ryleigh
Kyler
Dravyn
Jacelyn
Jacelynn
Kolie
Khloe (2)
Caryss
Blayse
Karsyn
Jaylynn
Kennadi
Brooklyn
Rylynn

Deadspin editor Drew Magary wrote up a funny response. I won’t quote the whole thing, but here are a few lines. (I quoted more of it in Name Quotes for the Weekend #8.)

  • “Well, this email has to be from Utah.”
  • “Maccie! I hope she has a sister named Jayceepynny.”
  • “I’d also like to single out Kyler for supreme awfulness.”

So let’s play a game with these names.

Pretend that one of your friends is expecting a baby girl. He/she shows you this list of trendy girl names and says, “We love all of these names! We can’t decide! Will you help us narrow it down to three?”

My three would have to be Addison, Kasey and Brooklyn. These just seem the least misspelled and/or ridiculous to me.

Which three names do you suggest to this friend, and why?

How Many Baby Girls Got -Ayden Names in 2009?

I did an analysis of baby boys with -ayden names last weekend and discovered that roughly 5% of the boys born in the U.S. last year have a name that rhymes with Jayden.

This weekend, I did the same analysis for baby girls. I sat down with the SSA’s baby name list for 2009, picked out all the female -ayden names, and counted both the number of the variants and the number of babies with each variant.

TOTAL 10,113 96

Of the (at least) 2,001,968 baby girls born last year, (at least) 10,113 were given an -ayden name. That’s about 0.5%, or about 1 in 200.

Of the 20,036 girl names on the SSA’s list, 96 are -ayden names. That’s also about 0.5%.

These percentages are a lot lower than the 4.9% and the 1.9% we saw last week, but still impressive. A total of 10,113 girls would theoretically put the -ayden name-group somewhere between #12 Addison (10,567) and #13 Alexis (9,839) in the rankings.

Update: Want to know how many babies (total) got an -ayden name in 2009?

[Disclaimer: I’m assuming all of the variants above rhyme with Jayden, but I can’t make any guarantees about pronunciation. Also, I didn’t count the following: variants with 2-vowel endings (e.g. -dien, -deyn) and variants that look like Eden and Madden.]

UPDATE: Is the -Ayden Craze Over?

TOTAL 102,992 267

Of the (at least) 2,095,910 baby boys born last year, (at least) 102,992 were given an -ayden name. That’s over 4.9%–about 1 in 20.

Of the 14,404 boy names on the SSA’s list, 267 are -ayden names. That’s 1.9%–about 1 in 50.

Do these numbers surprise you?

Update: Wondering how many baby girls or how many babies overall received an -ayden name in 2009?

[Disclaimer: I’m assuming all of the variants above rhyme with Jayden, but I can’t make any guarantees about pronunciation. Also, I didn’t count the following: variants with 3 syllables, variants with 2-vowel endings (e.g. -dien, -deyn), variants that look like Eden and Madden, and (possible variants?) Ajdin and Dredin.]

UPDATE: Is the -Ayden Craze Over?
