Kids Named for Cars – Porsche, Mercedes, Alfa

Last month, Joy Lowther of Norfolk, England, went into labor while shopping in a local supermarket. Ten minutes later, she gave birth to a baby girl.

She and her boyfriend decided to name the baby Porsche, as one of their older children is called Mercedes. The other two are Frank* and Alfie — who’s now called Alfa, says Joy, “because the girls are named after cars.”

Joy plans to have one more baby. If it’s a boy, he’ll be called Bentley (a name that’s very trendy in the U.S. right now thanks to reality TV).

Joy didn’t mention what she’d name another baby girl, but I know of a Porsche in Texas who has sisters named Audi and Lexus, so there are two ideas. Another possibility is Cressida, which might be picking up steam soon. Other car names that have been used as girl names include Camry, Jetta, Miata and Kia.

*Poor Frank. He’s the only sibling without a car name.

On that note, here’s a question for you: If you had a bunch of siblings (4+) and all but one of you had a name that fit a pattern, would you want one of the “in” names, or would you rather be the odd one out?

UK Baby Named After a Pub

Two months ago, Lisa Barnaby of Ware, Hertfordshire, gave birth to her second daughter in a pub parking lot.

She and her husband Gavin were trying to get to the hospital, but heavy traffic forced them to stop at the The Bell — a pub in Benington, Hertfordshire — and call an ambulance.

The baby didn’t want to wait, though. She ended up being delivered by paramedics there in the parking lot, in the back seat of Lisa and Gavin’s Vauxhall Zafira.

That night, someone from The Bell tweeted:

And call her Bella they did.

Mr Barnaby said naming their new baby after the pub was a good way of capturing Bella’s birth.

He said: “It will always be a reminder of that magical night.”

I wonder if the name Zafira was ever a contender. (I’ve blogged about multiple babies named after the cars they were born in — Ford, Jeep, Kia, Mondeo, Jazz, Camryn.)

Baby Girl Born in Kia Carens, Named Kia

Samantha Smyth didn’t make it to Poole Hospital in Dorset, England in time for the birth of her daughter. She ended up giving birth in the back seat of her mother’s Kia Carens in the wee hours of 15 November 2009.

The baby girl, who was going to be called Tilly, was named Kia in honor of her unusual birthplace. Samantha noted:

I don’t think we would have used Volkswagen or Citroen.

Several days after Kia’s birth, Kia Motors generously gave the young family a Kia Carens of their very own.
