Musician George Michael (born Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou) released his first solo album in late 1987.
Four of the singles from Faith reached the #1 spot on the Billboard charts in 1988 — “Faith” in January, “Father Figure” in February, “One More Try” in May, and “Monkey” in August.
In 1989, Faith won a Grammy for Album of the Year. “Father Figure” was also nominated a Grammy, but lost to Bobby McFerrin’s “Don’t Worry, Be Happy.”
Also in 1989, we see the compound name Georgemichael sneak onto the U.S. baby name charts for the very first time:
- 1992: unlisted
- 1991: 6 baby boys named Georgemichael
- 1990: unlisted
- 1989: 6 baby boys named Georgemichael [debut]
- 1988: unlisted
The SSA omits spaces and hyphens, so no doubt some of these Georgemichaels were actually named “George Michael” or “George-Michael.”
U.S. parents gave name one more try in 1997, when it briefly popped back onto the charts, but it hasn’t appeared in the data since then.
The sitcom Arrested Development (2003-2006) featured a character called George Michael, but the character wasn’t able to revive the name. (A character named Maeby, however, did manage to influence the charts…)
Last week’s post on Yan Ebyam reminded me of Maeby, which has appeared on the SSA’s baby name list three times so far:
- 2010: 8 baby girls named Maeby
- 2009: unlisted
- 2008: 7 baby girls named Maeby
- 2007: unlisted
- 2006: 6 baby girls named Maeby [debut]
- 2005: unlisted
It debuted the last year Arrested Development was on the air, which is notable because the sitcom featured a teenage character named Maeby Fünke.
According to Wikipedia…
Creator Mitchell Hurwitz named the character after his daughters Maisy and Phoebe. Hurwitz acknowledged the peculiar result of this blending, saying “It just seemed like crazy extra fun to think of weird names. I don’t want us to become too self-conscious about it but, yes, we do have some strange names.” Incidentally, she is often described as George Michael’s “Cousin Maeby,” a play on words making reference to the fact that they may not be related.
Maeby’s teenage counterpart on the show, George Michael Bluth, didn’t had the same impact on the baby name charts; the compound name Georgemichael hasn’t been on the SSA’s list since pop singer George Michael was popular back in the ’90s.
