Numerology: Baby names with a value of 1

Baby names with a numerological value of 1

If you’re on the hunt for baby names with a numerological value of 1, you’re in luck! Because today’s post features hundreds of 1-names.

Before we get to the names, though — how do we know that they’re “ones” in numerology?

Turning names into numbers

Here’s how to calculate the numerological value of a name.

First, for each letter, come up with a number to represent that letter’s position in the alphabet. (Letter A would be number 1, letter B would be number 2, and so forth.) Then, add all the numbers together. If the sum has two or more digits, add the digits together recursively until the result is a single digit. That single digit is the name’s numerological value.

For instance, the letters in the name Taylor correspond to the numbers 20, 1, 25, 12, 15, and 18. The sum of these numbers is 91. The digits of 91 added together equal 10, and the digits of 10 added together equal 1 — the numerological value of Taylor.

Number 1: Significance and associations

What does the number one mean in numerology?

There’s no definitive answer, unfortunately, because various numerological systems exist, and each one has its own interpretation of the number one. That said, if we look at a couple of modern numerology/astrology websites, we see 1 being described as “leader,” “independent,” “determined,” “creative,” and “self-assured.”

We can also look at associations, which are a bit more concrete. Here are a few things that are associated with the number 1:

  • Unity
  • Uniqueness
  • First place (as in sports)
  • Unicorn
  • Monolith

I kept the list short because you can associate the number 1 with just about anything. It’s universal, you might say. (See what I did there?)

What does the number 1 mean to you? What are your strongest associations with the number?

P.S. To see names with other numerological values, check out the posts for the numbers two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, and nine.

Where did the baby name Mitchum come from?

Actor Robert Mitchum (1917-1997)
Robert Mitchum

The surname Mitchum can be traced back to the English village of Mitcham (which now part of London). The toponym was derived from two Old English words meaning “big” and “homestead, settlement.”

Mitchum first appeared in the U.S. baby name data when actor Robert Mitchum was at the height of his fame, in the mid-20th century:

  • 1953: unlisted
  • 1952: unlisted
  • 1951: 5 baby boys named Mitchum [debut]
  • 1950: unlisted
  • 1949: unlisted

The appearance of Mitchum doesn’t seem to correspond to a notable Robert Mitchum-related event, oddly, like his single Academy Award nomination in 1946. (Same with several other debuts I’ve found, including Zsazsa and Sinatra — both also from the ’50s.)

Mitchum antiperspirant, 1970s-1980s
Mitchum antiperspirant

The name dropped out of the data the next year. It might have remained a one-hit wonder if not for a completely unrelated Mitchum: Mitchum antiperspirant.

Mitchum antiperspirant was developed in the late ’50s by a Paris, Tennessee, businessman named Mitchum Warren — the son of the founder of a successful cosmetics company. Warren died unexpectedly in the late ’60s, and his company was acquired by Revlon in 1970.

In 1971, Revlon re-introduced Mitchum with a national advertising campaign that featured the memorable tagline, “So effective you can skip a day.” A year after that, the name Mitchum re-appeared in the U.S. baby name data.

Revlon stopped actively marketing the brand in the late 1980s. Unsurprisingly, the name disappeared from the data around the same time.

Do you like the name Mitchum? Do you like it more or less than similar names, such as Mitchell and Magnum?

Where did the baby name Maeby come from?

The character Maeby Fünke from the TV series "Arrested Development" (2003-2006).
Maeby Fünke from “Arrested Development

The curious name Maeby began appearing in the U.S. baby name data in the early 2000s:

  • 2008: 7 baby girls named Maeby
  • 2007: unlisted
  • 2006: 6 baby girls named Maeby [debut]
  • 2005: unlisted
  • 2004: unlisted

It debuted the last year Arrested Development was on the air, which is notable because the sitcom featured a teenage character named Maeby Fünke (played by actress Alia Shawkat).

According to Wikipedia

Creator Mitchell Hurwitz named the character after his daughters Maisy and Phoebe. Hurwitz acknowledged the peculiar result of this blending, saying “It just seemed like crazy extra fun to think of weird names. I don’t want us to become too self-conscious about it but, yes, we do have some strange names.” Incidentally, she is often described as George Michael’s “Cousin Maeby,” a play on words making reference to the fact that they may not be related.

Maeby’s teenage counterpart/cousin on the show, George Michael Bluth, didn’t have the same impact on baby names; the compound name Georgemichael hasn’t been in the data since pop singer George Michael was popular back in the ’90s.

What about you — would you name your baby Maeby?

Baby names needed: Boy and girl names for Beatrix’s twin siblings

A reader named Marissa, who has a daughter named Beatrix Penelope (nn Bea), is expecting twins–one boy, one girl. She’s got their middle names narrowed down (Anthony or Alexander for the baby boy, Daphne or Jillian for the baby girl) but she’d like some help with their first names.

Here’s what she’s looking for in a boy name:

For the boy I’d like names that are two syllables long and start and end in a consonant. So far I like Robert, Patrick, Daniel and Fabian. The only one he likes is Fabian, but we’re still not sure.

And here’s what she’s looking for in a girl name:

For the girl I’d like names that are three or four syllables long, and start and end in a vowel. So far I like Anastasia, Ophelia, Elena and Ursula, but he likes none of them.

The babies’ last name will sound something like Thisbe.

Here are some of the boy names I came up with:

Calvin
Clement
Chester
Conrad
Curtis
David
Declan
Dexter
Duncan
Felix
Franklin
Holden
Howard
Jasper
Kenneth
Lincoln
Linus
Lucas
Malcolm
Martin
Maxwell
Miles
Mitchell
Nathan
Nelson
Nigel
Nolan
Philip
Raymond
Reuben
Roland
Roman
Silas
Simon
Stuart
Thomas
Victor
Vincent
William
Winston

And here are some ideas for the girl name:

Acantha
Adela
Adelina
Adriana
Agatha
Alexandra
Alexina
Alicia
Allegra
Althea
Amelia
Annabella
Andrea
Angela
Antonia
Arabella
Araminta
Athena
Augusta
Aurelia
Aurora
Azalea
Eleanora
Eliana
Elisa
Eloisa
Estella
Eugenia
Eulalia
Imelda
Iona
Irena/Irina
Isabella
Isidora
Octavia
Odelia
Odessa
Olivia
Olympia
Ottilia

Which of the above do you like best with Beatrix? (And which ones make the best boy/girl pairings, do you think?)

What other names would you suggest to Marissa?
