Popular Baby Names in Sonoma County, CA, 2014

California’s Sonoma County recently launched SoCo Data, “the open data portal for the County of Sonoma.” The site includes detailed baby name data going back to the mid-1800s.

Here are Sonoma’s top baby names of 2014:

Girl Names Boy Names
1. Emma, 35 baby girls
2. Sofia, 31
3. Isabella & Mia, 27 each (tie)
4. Sophia, 26
5. Camila, 25
1. Logan, 27 baby boys
2. Mateo, 26
3. Julian & Jack, 22 each (tie)
4. Wyatt, Dylan & Alexander, 21 each (tie)
5. Oliver & Damian, 20 each (tie)

The top girl names in Sonoma County are similar to the top girl names in California; all six of the girl names above are in CA’s top 10.

The top boy names, on the other hand, are totally different. Of the nine boy names above, only Alexander made CA’s top 10. In fact, six of the nine (Logan, Mateo, Jack, Wyatt, Oliver and Damian) aren’t even in CA’s top 20.

Here are some of the interesting baby names that debuted on the Sonoma list last year: Attalina, Cazadero, Donaleach, Fuamaila, Hannabella, Isaneli, Keeoa, Kleberly, Linatza, Lunabella, Melkis, Miakoda, Narieta, Nosson, Omnia Amour, Sanskrit, Tezcatlipoca, Thiemessie, Tonanzy, Toufie, Yaritcelia.

Eye-catching one-hit wonders from earlier years include Curtchberb, Guethscheneldia, Mounttaverddie, Nerbo, Nonsiatini, Olphert, Oneglia, Pervinka, Pualeilani, Torgie, Volkine, Vrina, Wanafay, Xmas, Yell and Zolferana.

Finally, the database indicates that at least 11 Sonoma County babies have been named Sonoma, and at least five more have been named either California or Kalifornia.

Like Symmetry? Try Palindromic Baby Names

Did you know that a handful of baby names happen to be palindromes? Here are some names that can be read the same way in either direction (i.e. both forwards and backwards):

Two of these, Hannah and Ava, happen to be very popular for baby girls at the moment.

Need two names? You could consider a pair of names that become a palindrome when written side-by-side (i.e., names that are anagrams of one another):

Aidan & Nadia
Aileen & Neelia
Alan & Nala
Allan & Nalla
Allen & Nella
Amin & Nima
Ariel & Leira
Arik & Kira
Aron & Nora
Avram & Marva
Axel & Lexa
Aydan & Nadya
Ari & Ira

Eliam & Maile
Ellen & Nelle
Etan & Nate
Flor & Rolf
Gem & Meg
Iris & Siri
Leon & Noel
Linus & Sunil
Miles & Selim
Nazar & Razan
Nero & Oren

It’s also possible to come up with your own palindromic pairs by flipping traditional names to create brand new names. For instance, I’ve seem James, Kevin, Manuel and Ramon flipped to become Semaj, Nivek, Leunam and Nomar.
