Unique Baby Names in Quebec, 2012

One thing I love about Quebec? Their yearly baby name list includes all baby names.

Not just names given to 5 or more babies, like the U.S. list. Not just names given to 3 or more babies, like the England and Wales list.

Every single name. Regardless of whether the name was given to hundreds of babies or just one.

Privacy: Who needs it! :)

Here are some stats on all those Quebec names:

  • 7,921 boy names total
    • 6,107 (77%) of them were given to 1 baby boy
    • 7121 (90%) of them were given to 1, 2, 3 or 4 baby boys*
  • 9,074 girl names total
    • 6,686 (74%) of them were given to 1 baby girl
    • 8058 (89%) of them were given to 1, 2, 3 or 4 baby girls*

*So, if the names given to 5+ babies in Quebec account for only about 10% of the names on the full list, and we assume baby name distribution in the U.S. is similar, the “full” U.S. lists should contain over 140,000 boy names and over 190,000 girl names.

I had my eye out for Inuit names in particular.

Among the girl names given to two babies last year, I spotted both Chaya Mushka and Katniss.

P.S. Here are the Most Popular Baby Names in Quebec for 2012.

Baby Name Needed for the Sibling of Phoenix

A reader named Lisa writes:

I have a 2 year old boy named Phoenix Edward Brooks*, and recently found out I’m pregnant again! The baby will be born in June, and we’re already racking our brains for names. We like “different” names – like Phoenix – who was named after the mythical bird – and would like something that goes well with Phoenix. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

At the moment she likes Leo/Leonardo for a boy, but doesn’t have any favorite girl names.

Here are some ideas to kick things off:

Boy names: Girl names:
Alistair
August
Deacon
Evander
Gideon
Griffin
Horatio
Ignatius
Jude
Malachi
Matthias
Maverick
Raphael
Briar
Daphne
Ione
Keziah
Magnolia
Penelope
Saffron
Saskia
Tanith
Tatiana
Tirzah
Verity
Xanthe

What other names would you suggest for Phoenix’s younger brother or sister?

*The last name isn’t Brooks, but does start with b and have one syllable.

Baby Names Needed – Sci-Fi Names for Boy/Girl Twins

A reader named Sam is having twins (a boy and a girl) in several weeks, but hasn’t yet found names for them. Sam writes:

My partner and I already have a 3 year old boy called Ryker after Will Riker on Star Trek Next Generation, as we both like Sci Fi.

The first thing that popped into my head is Robert Schnakenberg’s book Sci-Fi Baby Names. Google Books offers a nice preview.

The book seems to focus on names from TV and movies, so let’s balance that out with some ideas from literature:

  • Arthur, for Arthur C. Clarke, who wrote 2001: A Space Odyssey.
  • Douglas, for Douglas Adams, who wrote The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.
  • Isaac, for Isaac Asimov.
  • Julia or Julian, for Jules Verne.
  • Philip or Philippa, for Philip K. Dick.
  • Richard, for Richard Matheson, who wrote I Am Legend.
  • Ursula, for Ursula Le Guin.

Names that are more like Ryker in terms of style include:

Boys Girls
Beckett
Cash
Drake
Easton
Everett
Gavin
Jude
Leo
Max
Phoenix
Pierce
Sawyer
Alexa
Fiona
Harper
Jetta
Kira
Luna
Maya
Phoebe
Sage
Sienna
Stella
Violet

What other sci-fi names can you come up with for Sam’s twins? And what other names do you think sound good with Ryker?

Once You Go Unique, Is There No Going Back?

Echo Scarlett Honey Beaver of Milton Keynes (a town in England) is the second of five siblings. The other four are named:

  • Clint Battista (first name for Clint Eastwood)
  • Milo Phoenix Dee
  • Disney Taime Sapphire (first name in tribute to Walt Disney films)
  • Dali Paolo Reuben (first name for Salvador Dalí)

She’s also a mom. Her two children are Pharrell Cassius Diego and Lovella Honey. She says, “I had to carry on the tradition of unusual names–and I’m sure the rest of my family will do the same.”

Her comment made me curious. Are adults who grew up surrounded by unique names more likely to give their own children unique names?

Here are a couple of case studies:

  • Frank Zappa‘s four children are Moon, Dweezil, Ahmet (after Ahmet Ertegun, co-founder of Atlantic Records) and Diva. His grandkids are Mathilda, Zola and Ceylon.
  • Joaquin Phoenix’s sisters and (late) brother are River, Rain, Liberty and Summer. His nieces and nephews are Jonas, Rio, Indigo, Scarlette, Indiana and Atticus.

What are your thoughts?
