Oak (which can also be a name, or a set of initials)

In June of 1982, the Toledo Blade ran a short article about two local brothers who “enjoy the distinction of having initials which spell their names.” One was Thomas Owen Matzinger (T.O.M.), the other was James Irvin Matzinger (J.I.M.). Their dad Mike said it was “just as well” that he didn’t have any more kids, because he couldn’t think of any other sets of names to fit the pattern.

My guess is that Mike was joking, because there are several other sets of initials that could work with an M-surname like Matzinger, one of which, T.I.M., is just a letter away from T.O.M.

In fact, there are at least a couple of combinations that would work with every type of surname.

So today, in honor of the Matzingers of Toledo, I’ve come up with a long list of name-spelling initials. They’re sorted by third initial (that is, the first letter of the last name) so you can scroll straight to the set that matches up with your own surname.

Enjoy!

List of female names from 1888

female names, 1888

A while ago I found a book called “A Collection of Original Acrostics on Ladies’ Christian Names” that was published in Toronto in 1888.

I won’t post any of the poems, which are all pretty cheesy, but author George J. Howson does include an intriguing selection of names. He notes that he wrote acrostics for “all the most popular feminine christian names of the day, and many more that, while not in common use, are known to exist in actual life.”

Here’s the list:

Have any favorites?

Hulda/Huldah is one I like. It’s one of those names that I always see on old New England gravestones but never come across in real life. Wonder when that one will become stylish again.

BTW, has anyone ever seen a good name acrostic? Like, one that’s actually well-written and/or thought-provoking? Because I don’t think I ever have.

How many names is too many names?

Uma Thurman was all over the news last week.

Why? Because the name of her baby girl, born way back on July 15, was finally announced.

And it’s quote long: Rosalind Arusha Arkadina Altalune Florence Thurman-Busson, nickname Luna. (The father is Uma’s boyfriend Arpad Busson.)

That’s five given names, not to mention the double-barrelled surname and the nickname.

What do you think — is that too many names?

And here’s another question: Which of those five names — Rosalind, Arusha, Arkadina, Altalune or Florence — is your favorite?

P.S. Calvin Coolidge Julius Caesar Tuskahoma McLish is another person I know of with five given names. Can you think of any others?

Anagram baby names (8 letters long)

Anagram baby names (8 letters)

Looking for a set of baby names with something in common? If so, here are some 8-letter anagram names for you to check out!

Anagrams are words that contain the same set of letters, but not in the same sequence. For instance, the words “predator,” “parroted,” and “teardrop” are all anagrams of one another.

Anagram names can be a neat option for siblings — particularly multiples (like twins and triplets). They’re also a clever way to connect a baby name to the name of an older relative (e.g., grandpa Laurence, grandson Cerulean).

Below are hundreds of eight-letter names (collected from the SSA’s huge database of U.S. baby names) that happen to be anagrams of other names.
