On the girls’ list, Anna replaces Emma as the #1 name and Evi replaces Lotte in the top 10.

And on the boys’ list? All kinds of drama! Liam, which rose very quickly over the last few years to reach the top spot in 2015, not only lost that top spot to Daan, but dropped out of the top 10 entirely (!), replaced by Max. Liam now ranks unlucky 13th.

At first I thought Sergiovanni might be an epic mash-up of Sergio and Giovanni, but then I found out that it’s just an Italian surname — Giovanni prefixed by ser, an occupational word for a notary.

More Unusual Baby Names in New Zealand

In an article about unusual baby names in New Zealand — the land of 4real, Zealand-New and Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii — I spotted these: Alizaye, Caution, Chevy, Daytona, Falcon, Ford, Prayz Hosanna, Qais and Raiden.

Independent midwife Leigh O’Neill said parents were influenced by the world around them, especially the media, when choosing names for their babies. One of the most unusual baby names she has come across this year was Ska, named after a genre of music.

“It’s a punk/reggae kind of music and yeah, they’re young parents.

“I guess they chose that after the type of music they like, but that’s certainly one of the more interesting ones,” Mrs O’Neill said.

I’m now on the lookout for kids named Reggae, Dubstep and Crunk.
