Male names in the Domesday Book

Page of the Domesday Book

I listed all the female names in the Domesday Book a while back, so today I thought I’d complete the project by listing all the male names.

The male names below appeared in the Open Domesday database just once, except where noted. (For the record, I overlooked entries in which one person’s name was used to refer to another person, e.g., “Aelfric’s uncle.”)

The most-mentioned name within each letter group is in bold.

If you make it all the way to the bottom, your reward is a top ten list. :)

And now it’s time for the…

Top Ten Male Names

Which male were mentioned most often in the Domesday book? The #1 name was William, followed by Robert and Ralph:

  1. William (166)
  2. Robert (127)
  3. Ralph (124)
  4. Aelfric (88)
  5. Alwin (76) [tie]
  6. Hugh (76) [tie]
  7. Roger (73)
  8. Godwin (72)
  9. Walter (64)
  10. Godric (59)

Though the names in the book aren’t necessarily representative of name usage in England overall, it does make sense than William took the top spot. The Domesday Book was created a couple of decades after the Norman Conquest, at a time when the name William was very fashionable, thanks to William the Conqueror.

Baby girl delivered by drunken midwife, named Robert

midwife

Move over, Jesse Roper. This might just be my new favorite baby name story of all time.

Robert, daughter of William Thompson, bap. 15 Feb. 1730, the midwife mistaking the sex, ebrietas dementat.

Ebrietas dementat is Latin for “crazed with drunkenness.” So, this baby girl was given a boy name because the drunken midwife got the gender wrong.

Cracks me up. :)

How could this have happened?

Back in 18th-century England, when newborns were baptized as soon as possible, the midwife was typically the only person to get a good look at a baby between birth and baptism.

Midwives who were tired, or overworked, or stressed, or…well, drunk…sometimes became confused amid all the excitement and reported the wrong gender.

Once the baptism took place and the name was affixed, though, there was no going back.

Gender mix-ups like this one were rare, but not unheard of. English baptismal registers include other baby girls with boy names, and baby boys with girl names.

And here’s another interesting fact: Did you know that midwives also sometimes named the babies they delivered?

If a midwife saw that the baby was in danger of not being delivered alive, she was obligated to baptize the child as soon as it began to emerge. Because the baby’s gender would be unknown at that point, it was customary to bestow a gender-neutral name. Here are some examples:

  • Chylde of God
  • Creature
  • Creature of Christ
  • Creature of God
  • Creatura
  • Creatura Christi
  • Vitalis

People with these names sometimes pop up in parish marriage records, proving that at least a few midwife-named babies managed to survive infancy and live to adulthood.

The practice of lay-baptism was long gone by the time baby girl Robert was born, though. It ceased after England adopted Protestantism. (It was officially ended at the Hampton Court Conference in 1604.)

What gave the baby name Vidalia a boost in 1997?

The rare name Vidalia returned to the U.S. baby name data in 1996, then saw a spike in usage the very next year:

  • 1999: 6 baby girls named Vidalia
  • 1998: 13 baby girls named Vidalia
  • 1997: 17 baby girls named Vidalia
  • 1996: 11 baby girls named Vidalia
  • 1995: unlisted
  • 1994: unlisted

That 1997 high-point remained Vidalia’s peak usage for over two decades.

What inspired this sudden interest in the name Vidalia?

The country song “Vidalia” (pronounced vie-DAYL-ya) by Sammy Kershaw. The song was released in mid-1996 and, later the same year, reached #10 on Billboard‘s “Hot Country Songs” chart.

The song is about a girl named Vidalia whose parents combined their own names (“Your dear mama Violet/And your proud daddy Dale”) to come up with a name that happened to be the name of an onion — an unusually sweet onion, but an onion nonetheless (“Sweet Vidalia/You always gotta make me cry”).

The Vidalia onion — Georgia’s official state vegetable — was first discovered/grown near Vidalia, Georgia, in the early 1930s. (In fact, an old Atlanta Journal-Constitution article reveals that 5 of the baby Vidalias born between 1990 and 2008 were born in Georgia specifically.)

The town of Vidalia may have been named in honor of Spanish aristocrat Don José Vidal, or after Vidalia, Louisiana (which itself was named for Vidal).

The surname Vidal can be traced back to the Latin personal name Vitalis, which comes from the Latin word vita, meaning “life.”

What are your thoughts on the baby name Vidalia?
