Baby name story: Volcano

Mount Nyiragongo

In January of 2002, Mount Nyiragongo — a volcano in the Democratic Republic of the Congo — erupted.

Lava from the eruption flowed through the center of the Congolese city of Goma, located roughly 10 miles away.

One of the neighborhoods destroyed by the lava was the one where Muhima Mungo (and her husband, and their eight children) lived.

Several days after the eruption, Muhima gave birth to the family’s ninth child, a baby boy.

His name? Volcano.
