Turkey Allows Baby to Be Named Kurdistan

After a long court battle, Yunus and Elif Toprak, a Kurdish couple living in Turkey, have won the right to name their baby girl Kurdistan.

The lower court had ruled the child’s name was an “insult to society”, and said the 23-month-old girl should instead be named Helin – a common first name in Turkey’s southwestern Sanliurfa province.

[Turkish news agency] Dogan said the higher court quashed the ruling, citing every parent’s right to be able to name their own children even though the origins of the name may be foreign.

The Kurdish people, who are “seen as a political threat by all four of the countries they inhabit” (Iran, Iraq, Syria and Turkey), make up about about 18% of the population of Turkey.
