Name Quotes for the Weekend #5

From name researcher Cleveland Evans:

With combined spellings, I also found 25,451 Jaydens, 13,249 Braydens, 5,102 Haydens and 2,320 Zaydens. When more rare names like Grayden, Bladen, Slayden and Waden are added in, the total number of boys with names rhyming with Aiden was more than 94,000, or more than 4.6 percent of all names for boys in 2011.

I calculated 4.9% for 2009. (Never did 2010.)

From Pandora Radio’s bio for the band Needtobreathe:

Named after acclaimed University of Alabama football coach Paul “Bear” Bryant, brothers Bear and Bryant “Bo” Rinehart were born and raised in rural Possum Kingdom, South Carolina, where their pastor father ran a church camp.

From Abby Sandel of the blog Appellation Mountain:

I’m reading Lisa Napoli’s Radio Shangri-La: What I Discovered on my Accidental Journey to the Happiest Kingdom on Earth, and wouldn’t you know it? Chapter Five starts with an account of baby naming customs in Bhutan:

If you walked into any village in all of Bhutan and shouted “Karma,” a quarter of the heads would turn. There are only about fifty names in the whole country … As Bhutan becomes more modern, some of the more daring Bhutanese parents break tradition in order to distinguish themselves, altering the spelling of familiar names or abbreviating them.

Napoli also explains that monks traditionally choose children’s names, but some of the boldest parents are also changing that custom. I have a feeling that there’s enough there for a book in itself!

From a Telegraph article about UK baby names:

An especially interesting development is the middle-class fashion for retro kitsch, with old-fashioned names such as Alfie, Charlie, Lily and Florence among the fastest-growing. Perhaps this yearning for the past is a good thing. But isn’t there a hint of Cath Kidston tweeness in the hordes of young Ernests and Olivers, Esmes and Maisies? Some friends, or friends of friends, are coming up with names that wouldn’t be out of place in a PG Wodehouse novel. It’s not quite reached the Bertram Wilberforce (or even Pelham Grenville) stage, but it’s getting there.

Here are quote lists #1, #2, #3 and #4.

TOTAL 10,113 96

Of the (at least) 2,001,968 baby girls born last year, (at least) 10,113 were given an -ayden name. That’s about 0.5%, or about 1 in 200.

Of the 20,036 girl names on the SSA’s list, 96 are -ayden names. That’s also about 0.5%.

These percentages are a lot lower than the 4.9% and the 1.9% we saw last week, but still impressive. A total of 10,113 girls would theoretically put the -ayden name-group somewhere between #12 Addison (10,567) and #13 Alexis (9,839) in the rankings.

Update: Want to know how many babies (total) got an -ayden name in 2009?

[Disclaimer: I’m assuming all of the variants above rhyme with Jayden, but I can’t make any guarantees about pronunciation. Also, I didn’t count the following: variants with 2-vowel endings (e.g. -dien, -deyn) and variants that look like Eden and Madden.]

How Many Baby Boys Got -Ayden Names in 2009?

We all know that names like Jayden and Aiden are popular. But…how popular?

This weekend, my goal was to find out.

I sat down with the SSA’s baby name list for 2009, picked out all the -ayden names, and counted them. I counted both the number of variants and the number of babies with each variant.

Here’s a run-down of what I found, sorted by ending. (Get ready to scroll!)

TOTAL 102,992 267

Of the (at least) 2,095,910 baby boys born last year, (at least) 102,992 were given an -ayden name. That’s over 4.9%–about 1 in 20.

Of the 14,404 boy names on the SSA’s list, 267 are -ayden names. That’s 1.9%–about 1 in 50.

Do these numbers surprise you?

Update: Wondering how many baby girls or how many babies overall received an -ayden name in 2009?

[Disclaimer: I’m assuming all of the variants above rhyme with Jayden, but I can’t make any guarantees about pronunciation. Also, I didn’t count the following: variants with 3 syllables, variants with 2-vowel endings (e.g. -dien, -deyn), variants that look like Eden and Madden, and (possible variants?) Ajdin and Dredin.]

UPDATE: Is the -Ayden Craze Over?

The Next Big -den Name – Bladen, Dreyden, Graden, Payden

Jayden, Aidan, Caden, Braden and Hayden (and their many variants) are well-established on the list of the top U.S. baby names. Zayden and Raiden have joined the rankings recently as well.

Which “-den” name will be next to pop up on the list?

Well, the Sacred Heart Medical Center in Eugene, Oregon welcomed a baby Graden on April 5 and a baby Dreyden on May 2. Benefis Healthcare in Great Falls, Montana welcomed a baby Bladen on May 22 and a baby Payden on March 11. Those are some possibilities. And I wouldn’t be too surprised to see a Sladen, Tayden or Treyden on the list, either.

It’s likely that Xayden will show up at some point, but I’m not sure it should count as an entirely new “-den” name. (If you pronounce the X like a Z, it’s a variant of Zayden; if you pronounce the Z like an H, it’s a variant of Hayden.)

So which “-den” would you put your money on? Why?

Update: Just spotted a Blayden, born on May 6th at St. Joseph Hospital in Washington state.

Newbie Names Among the Most Popular of 2006

As I scanned through the 1,000 most popular baby names of 2006, I saw a number of new additions. This list doesn’t include all of them, just the ones that jumped out at me.

  • Bethzy, #878 for girls
  • Dahlia, #988 for girls – from the flower named after Anders Dahl.
  • Izayah, #976 for boys – a creative take on Isaiah.
  • Jorja, #969 for girls – a form of Georgia (perhaps popularized by CSI actress Jorja Fox).
  • Neveah, #996 for girls – Nevaeh corrected for pronunciation.
  • Paisley, #835 for girls – not just a pattern anymore.
  • Sanai, #974 for girls – inspired by the biblical Mt. Sinai.
  • Scarlet, #843 for girls – a simplified version of Scarlett.
  • Yandel, #674 for boys
  • Yaretzi, #837 for girls – likely an alteration of Yaritza.
  • Zayden, #871 for boys – ’twas just a matter of time before the unique first letter craze and the -ayden craze hooked up.

I also saw a number of interesting second-timers, including Imanol (969th for boys) and Yuridia (894th for girls).
