A reader named Amy is expecting her first baby, which will be a boy. She writes:
I like very old fashioned sounding names (Nathaniel, Jeremiah, Isaiah) and [my husband] likes newer, trendier names (Dylan, Zachary). Our last name starts with a Q so we don’t want anything that that ends in a c/k sound or anything that begins with a Q. We both like the name Jacob, but are worried it would be shortened to Jake, creating the ending k.
I share that concern about Jacob. In fact, I’ve never met a Jacob that didn’t go by Jake. :)
The very first name that came to mind was Caleb, which is similar to Jacob but doesn’t pose that same k-ending problem.
Next I thought of names like Elijah, Eli, Levi and Malachi — biblical names that have become popular within the last few years. Based on the example names Amy gave, I think one of these could be a good compromise between old fashioned and trendy.
