Mariah Carey’s twins, born Saturday, were named Moroccan (boy) and Monroe (girl).
Monroe comes from “Marilyn Monroe, who has been an inspiration to Mariah her whole life.”
And Moroccan? “The top tier of Mariah’s New York City apartment is called the Moroccan Room, because of the Moroccan-inspired decor. It’s also the place where Nick proposed to his wife, overlooking Manhattan!”
Moroccan is the only baby I know of (so far) with a décor-inspired name.
Thoughts?
I think both are awful. Monroe is a boys name, if she wanted to pay tribute to MM why not Marilyn?
Moroccan is a nationality for goodness sake. Morocco is a bit better since he could go with Rocco.
You know, I was braced for something really predictable, like Madison and Mason, so at least they surprised me.
Your comment about decor-inspired names made me think of the “Pregnant in Heels” episode with the baby naming think tank. One of the parents’ rules was “no decorative names” – I couldn’t wrap my head around what a “decorative” name was, despite their attempts at an explanation.
Now I know!
Fun fact: there were 93 girls named Monroe in 2010 and 36 boys. I’m sure Monroe will be ranked a lot higher in 2011.
I read something today that they’re calling Moroccan “Rock”. That sounds a bit better to me, but then with his last name Cannon, it seems kind of off using either the full name or the nickname. I agree Morocco would seem more like a name to me.
