In early 1910s, about 40% of the over 60,000 babies born annually in Wisconsin were not named at birth, so they had “no official name on the state records.” This fact led one newspaper to joke:
The most popular name for babies; what is it?
Official records show it is simply “Baby.”
This was followed by a reminder to choose and register baby names as soon as possible.
